Key statistics

National results for pupils at the end of key stage 4 for all schools (both state-funded and independent)

  • 58.6% achieved five or more GCSEs at grade A* to C or equivalent including English and mathematics GCSEs or iGCSEs, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points from the year 2010 to 2011 (Table 1a, Chart 1). The decrease appears to be because of a reduction in English entries in independent schools, the possible reasons for this reduction have been analysed in the technical notes section of this SFR.
  • 25% were entered for all of the subject areas of the English Baccalaureate and 18.1% passed every subject area with grade A* to C. This compares to 23.8% who were entered and 17.6% who achieved the English Baccalaureate in the year 2010 to 2011 (Table 1b).
  • 59.2% achieved English and mathematics GCSEs or iGCSEs at grade A* to C, compared to 59.6% in the year 2010 to 2011, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points (Table 2).
  • 81.1% achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grade A* to C or equivalent, an increase of 1.5 percentage points from 79.6% in the year 2010 to 2011 (Table 1a, Chart 1).
