Project Gigabit Social Value Employment update: September 2026

Published 25 September 2026

Applies to England

1. Table notes

Please note that:

  • Figures are rounded to nearest 10

  • Each contract has been allocated to the region where the majority of build activity is planned. Jobs and apprenticeships may not necessarily be located in the same region as the associated contract, because suppliers decide how and where to deploy their workforce.

  • Regions are matched using a best-fit approach using premises within contracts and the ONS National Statistics UPRN Lookup (June 2026)

2. Definitions and data notes

BDUK has provided these figures based on quarterly supplier reporting against social value Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Building Digital UK (BDUK) works with suppliers to verify aspects of their return, but this does not constitute a full audit of the information provided.

The UK government receives jobs and apprenticeships data from Project Gigabit broadband suppliers where they have contractual social value commitments and must report on them. The true number may be higher as suppliers may create additional jobs and apprenticeships that are not required to be reported.

Owing to differences in supplier reporting approaches, figures were aggregated from suppliers’ quarterly returns using the rules outlined below. Where a relevant KPI was reported directly, the value was used without further adjustment.

These rules were applied to ensure a consistent approach to identifying the number of jobs and apprenticeships attributable to Project Gigabit  contracts:

  • Some supplier apprenticeships last for 78 weeks. Where apprenticeship activity was reported in terms of the number of weeks completed, the figure was converted to an estimated number of apprenticeships by dividing the total weeks by 78, representing the duration of the apprenticeship.

  • Only figures explicitly reporting the creation or number of apprenticeships were included. T-Level placements, internships, work experience, graduate placements and training courses were excluded.

  • Direct and Indirect recruitment refers to those employed directly in the reporting organisation or indirectly through their supply chain. Aggregation of these figures does not distinguish between reported full-time or part-time employment, or between permanent or temporary employment.

Project Gigabit contract geographies reflect broadband infrastructure and commercial build plans, and do not necessarily align with standard local authority or regional boundaries. Some contracts cover more than one region. For reporting purposes, each contract has been allocated to the region where the majority of build activity is planned. Jobs and apprenticeships may not necessarily be located in the same region as the associated contract, because suppliers decide how and where to deploy their workforce. The implication is that significant care needs to be taken when interpreting the regional data provided.
