Lord Nick Downshire has applied to the Environment Agency for 2 licences.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006).
The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the Deep Gill Beck at Thirsting Castle Lodge, East Witton, North Yorkshire at National Grid Reference (NGR) SE 14760 84450.
The application is to abstract water as follows:
- 360 cubic metres an hour
- 8,640 cubic metres a day
- 2,371,680 cubic metres a year
Between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.
The water will be used for hydropower generation using a Turgo turbine.
Lord Nick Downshire has also applied to the Environment Agency for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the Deep Gill Beck at Thirsting Castle Lodge, East Witton, North Yorkshire at NGR SE 14760 84450.
By building a low intake weir incorporating a Coanda screen water will be impounded to create a head for abstraction.
The proposed abstraction and impounding works lies within the Swale, Ure, Nidd and Upper Ouse Abstraction Licensing Strategy reporting area.
