Government Property Agency Environmental Policy Statement

Updated 9 December 2024

The Government Property Agency’s (GPA’s) vision is a transformed, shared, sustainable and value for money government estate supporting civil servants to work productively in every nation and region of the UK.

The GPA recognises its potential to impact the environment, positively or negatively, directly or indirectly, through its activities, services and supply chain.  We are committed to continually improving our environmental performance within the scope of our Environmental Management System, in order to ensure the protection of the environment and prevention of pollution. This includes a commitment to fulfilling all compliance obligations and working towards best practice.

We are transforming our organisation for the future by putting our clients and customers at the heart of what we do, developing skills, introducing new technology and systems, and building our supply chain. We will continue to deliver what is important to clients, to reduce carbon emissions and to deliver significant savings for the UK Government. We will work in partnership with departmental partners and our supply chain to deliver this.

The GPA contribution to sustainability will go beyond reducing carbon emissions. Our ExCo Sustainability Committee also oversees wider work looking at minimising waste and consumption of energy and water, improving resilience to climate change (temperature change, flood risk etc.) and reducing carbon embodied in construction. We want our properties to be socially sustainable for the communities that we serve.

The GPA Environmental Management System covers, and sets objectives, that focus on the key areas of:

  • Carbon emissions and net zero;
  • Waste and the circular economy;
  • Water use and pollution prevention;
  • Construction environmental best practice;
  • Supply chain procurement, performance and material use; and
  • Climate Change Adaptation.
