Details of the application

The Estates Agent of the Sandringham Estate has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the River Babingley on the Sandringham Estate, Sandringham, Norfolk at National Grid Reference (NGR) TF 71814 26275.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water as follows:

  • at an instantaneous rate of 309 litres per second
  • 1,112 cubic metres an hour
  • 3,338 cubic metres a day
  • 28,429 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 March and 31 August inclusive in each year

The water will be used for spray irrigation. The applicant will use the licence to undertake frost protection and spray irrigation of 50 acres of blackcurrants.

The proposal lies within the Babingley catchment and the North West Norfolk Abstraction Licensing Strategy area.
