Details of the application
The Environment Agency has received a new bespoke application for an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from Stanton Energy Ltd.

Regulated facility type
This proposal is for a new 5.4 Part A (b) (i) Anaerobic Digester site on Crompton Road in Ilkeston, part of the wider Hallam Fields industrial area. The site will biologically treat 83,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste annually in an enclosed digestion process, producing digestate and gas for export to grid.
The site will accept wastes containing animal tissue and therefore must pasteurise the waste in line with PAS110.
Site containment is in line with Ciria 736.
The operations at the site will comprise of the following: • Physical treatment of waste including shredding, sorting, screening, compaction, baling, mixing and maceration.
• Waste pasteurisation and chemical addition.
• Gas cleaning and upgrading to biomethane.
• Gas storage and drying.
• Treatment of digestate including screening to remove plastic residues, centrifuge or pressing, addition of thickening agents (polymers) or drying (other than for the purpose of use as a fuel) Maturation of digestate.
• Use of an auxiliary flare required only for short periods of breakdown or maintenance of the facility.
• Use of pressure release valves to protect the integrity of the plant. Such systems should not be used routinely to vent unburnt biogas.

- a summary of the management system
- an environmental risk assessment
- proposed operating techniques, including an assessment of best available techniques
- management plans to address any key risks
- modelling and monitoring of any significant emissions to air, land or water
- a report on the condition of the site
- raw material usage and measures for energy efficiency and avoiding waste production
