AAIB Record-only investigations reviewed: May - June 2026
Published 13 August 2026
This section provides details of accidents and incidents which were not subject to a Field or full Correspondence Investigation. They are wholly, or largely, based on information provided by the aircraft commander at the time of reporting and in some cases additional information from other sources. The accuracy of the information provided cannot be assured.
| Event Date | Aircraft Type | Registration | Location | Record Only Occurrence Text |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 May 2025 | Vans RV-6 | G-BZWZ | Hodenhagen Airfield, Germany | On approach, the aircraft encountered gusty conditions, increasing in severity during the final 50 ft. A late go-around was initiated, but the aircraft mainwheels touched down and the right wing lifted. The aircraft departed the left side of the runway and ground looped, coming to rest on its nose. |
| 6 Apr 2026 | PIK 20E | G-OPIK | Sutton Bank Airfield, Yorkshire | On the takeoff roll, the propeller detached from a self launching motor glider, which then came to a stop on the runway before getting airborne. The loss of propeller was attributed to the failure of a locking-washer tab retaining the propeller nut. The propeller did not collide with any other aircraft or third parties. |
| 2 May 2026 | Piper PA-32R | N73BL | London Elstree Aerodrome, Hertfordshire | The aircraft landed with one main landing gear retracted and veered off the side of the runway before coming to a halt. It was subsequently found that a bolt had come loose in the landing gear assembly and caught on the aircraft structure, preventing the landing gear from lowering. |
| 6 May 2026 | Cessna 152 | G-CINA | Sibson Aerodrome, Cambridgeshire | Following a solo cross-country, the student pilot experienced a bounced landing during which the propeller contacted the ground and the nose landing gear collapsed. |
| 12 May 2026 | Piper PA-34-200T | G-BOUK | Retford Gamston Airport, Nottinghamshire | The aircraft touched down approximately half way down the runway and failed to stop before reaching the end of the runway. The aircraft came to a halt in agricultural land. When the pilot attempted turn the aircraft and return to the runway, the nose landing gear collapsed. |
| 15 May 2026 | Piper PA-28-161 | G-BZIO | White Waltham Airfield, Berkshire | The aircraft bounced on landing and nose gear collapsed. |
| 15 May 2026 | Piper PA-28-181 | G-BRME | Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, Essex | The pilot was not familiar with the aerodrome but obtained a briefing before departure and then made two passes of the aerodrome before making an approach to Runway 20. The approach was flown at 80 kt instead of 75 kt because there was a 15 kt crosswind. The pilot reported that, after touchdown, the aircraft could not be slowed despite full braking, and it ran off the far end of the runway and into a vineyard. |
| 16 May 2026 | Cessna 152 | G-BNKP | Clacton Airfield, Essex | During a series of uneventful solo circuits, the student pilot landed the aircraft heavily which damaged the nose landing gear. With hindsight, the student pilot considered the speed to have been too high and that they should have initiated a go-around. |
| 16 May 2026 | Sonex | G-CEFJ | Temple Bruer Airfield, Lincolnshire | The aircraft experienced an engine failure on approach. The aircraft was established in a glide and made a forced landing. During landing, the aircraft struck a fence. |
| 24 May 2026 | Sonex | G-KATO | Otherton Airfield, Staffordshire | The aircraft was on final approach to Runway 25 when it encountered an area of subsiding air, likely associated with convective activity over adjacent farmland with differing surface heating characteristics. This resulted in a rapid loss of height. Full power was applied and a nose-up attitude adopted but the aircraft was unable to arrest the descent before it touched down in a cornfield short of the runway. The aircraft struck a ditch and came to rest inverted. |
| 25 May 2026 | Grob G115 | G-CIMI | White Waltham Airfield, Berkshire | The aircraft was returning from a local flight and the pilot stated that he was landing in “what felt like a thermal”. The pilot reported that the thermal effect appeared to stop suddenly as he began to flare the aircraft for touchdown leading to an unexpectedly high sink rate. On touchdown, the left main landing gear collapsed followed by the nose landing gear and the aircraft came to a halt. |
| 26 May 2026 | X’Air Hawk | G-CESJ | Chilbolton Airfield, Hampshire | The aircraft’s first approach to Runway 06 was unstable and resulted in a go-around. The second approach was stable; however, the aircraft floated during the landing and touched down a significant distance along the runway. Although it was recognised the remaining runway length was insufficient to stop, a go-around was not initiated due to a concern that the aircraft would not clear powerlines beyond the end of the runway. The aircraft departed the end of the runway, crossed a ditch and came to rest in a hedge. |
| 28 May 2026 | DH82C Tiger Moth (Modified) | G-FCTK | Dunkeswell Aerodrome, Devon | During the landing on an introductory flight, the pilot’s forward view became obstructed when the front seat passenger leaned to the left. The pilot’s instruction for the passenger to return to an upright position was not heard due to engine and airflow noise. With the pilot’s view restricted, he looked down the right side of the aircraft losing sight of the fence on the left edge of the runway. The aircraft deviated towards the left side of the runway, struck the fence, and overturned before coming to rest inverted in a field adjacent to the runway. |
| 30 May 2026 | Quikr | G-CJNH | Titsey Airstrip, Surrey | The aircraft touched down at excessive speed. During the landing roll, the pilot applied wheel brakes but the aircraft skidded. The brakes were released and subsequently reapplied but the aircraft overran the runway. The aircraft went through a fence and collided with a bank. |
| 1 Jun 2026 | Beagle B121 Series 2 | G-AXJJ | Derby Airfield, Derbyshire | The aircraft was being flown by a solo student. The takeoff was normal but when downwind, the door opened and unlatched to 45°. The cockpit became very noisy due to wind noise, distracting the student. The aircraft conducted a normal approach but landed flat. The nose landing gear was damaged and fluid leaked out. |
| 14 Jun 2026 | Piper PA-28-140 | G-GCAT | Inverness Airport | Following a heavy landing, the aircraft bounced before deviating to the right and exiting the asphalt runway onto grass. The runway excursion caused damage to the nose wheel and propeller. |
| 16 Jun 2026 | Flylight Peabee Sub-70 Microlight | N/A (SSDR) | Over Farm Airfield, Gloucestershire | The pilot reported that he “lost throttle control” and was not able to lose enough height to land at the beginning of the airstrip. The aircraft continued to descend as is passed along the strip and, as it approached the end of the grass, the pilot turned left towards an open area. On touchdown, the aircraft tipped over causing damage to the main strut and fracturing the pilot’s wrist. |
| 18 Jun 2026 | Bell 505 | G-KANF | Stanbridge, Bedfordshire | The helicopter’s tail hit a low tree while repositioning after landing. The tail and tail rotor systems were substantially damaged. |
| 26 Jun 2026 | Grob G109 | G-BIXZ | Saltby Airfield, Lincolnshire | The aircraft had started its takeoff run when, at approximately 20 kt, the airframe began to vibrate. Shortly after this the propeller departed from the aircraft. Initial inspection suggested that the propeller shaft had failed. |
| 27 Jun 2026 | Jodel D18 | G-OLEM | Sherlowe Airfield, Shropshire | The pilot reported that he encountered rotor turbulence and sink just prior to touchdown. Power was applied but the right wing touched the ground causing the aircraft to rotate. When the aircraft had rotated through 180°, the main landing gear collapsed and the aircraft slid to a halt, pointing in the direction from which it had come. |
