James Malcomson is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford and Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College. He has a PhD from Harvard University and held academic positions at the Universities of York and Southampton prior to Oxford. His research is concerned with contracts, with particular application to employment and to the provision of health services. In 2010-12, he chaired a commission set up by the Office of Health Economics on Competition in the NHS that, in addition to health economists, included people from the medical profession, the Department of Health and the NHS Confederation.

The Member of the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration is independent. Its role is to make recommendations to the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for Health, the First Minister and the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing of the Scottish Parliament, the First Minister and the Minister for Health and Social Services in the Welsh Assembly Government and the First Minister, Deputy First Minister and Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety of the Northern Ireland Executive on the remuneration of doctors and dentists taking any part in the National Health Service.
