Analysis in Government Awards 2021 Shortlist

Nominations for the Analysis in Government Awards 2021 are now closed and the winners have been announced. You can find a full list of winners in our news article.

We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has submitted a nomination for the Analysis In Government Awards. We have received over 130 nominations; an indication of just how important government analysis has been this year.

There are six separate awards which will be presented to individuals and teams from across the Analysis Function and you can find the shortlisted entries under each category.

Award categories

The Professor Sir Ian Diamond Excellence Award 2021

This award recognises an individual that has displayed excellence in championing, promoting or growing the Analysis Function. This could be by highlighting analysis across government, developing our people, inspiring analysts, or delivering better outcomes for the citizen.

The shortlisted entries are:

  • Quality assurance overhaul – Sophie Skillings, Department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities
  • Improving border security through innovative and collaborative analysis – Amy Thomas, Home Office
  • Data Science Fellow Superhero – Stephen Simpkin, Essex County Council
  • Data Science capability and community work – Nikki Shorrock, Department for Health and Social Care
  • Collaborations for Methodological excellence – Gary Brown, Office for National Statistics
  • Analysis Function Snapshot Workforce Data Product – Rhys Jones, Office for National Statistics

Collaboration

This award recognises collaboration between teams, departments, other professions and/or external organisations/researchers to deliver a piece of analysis or analytical project.

The shortlisted entries are:

  • Music creators’ earnings in the digital era – Intellectual Property Office
  • National operating theatre productivity data collection – NHS England and NHS Improvement
  • Public Health Data Asset (PHDA) project – Office for National Statistics
  • Economic activity and Social change in the UK – Office for National Statistics
  • Mental Health of Children and Young People in England 2021 – Office for National Statistics
  • Explore Education Statistics – Department for Education
  • Covid-19 Weekly Report and Dashboard – Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

Innovative Methods

This award recognises innovative methods of analysis which led to new insight, answered complex questions, or improved efficiency.

The shortlisted entries are:

  • GCSE attainment and lifetime earnings – Department for Education
  • Local Freight Tool environment – Transport for the North
  • NHS Early Warning System and NHS use of Oxford OpenABM – NHS England and NHS Improvement
  • International migration estimates in the absence of the International Passenger Survey (IPS) – Office for National Statistics
  • Estimating vehicle and pedestrian activity from town and city traffic cameras – Office for National Statistics
  • Quantifying the impact of the COVID-19 vaccination programme on hospitalisations: A control cohort study using data linkage – NHS England and NHS Improvement

Communication

This award celebrates those who have successfully used clear communications to present analysis, considering needs of the audience. This could be an example of public-facing or internal communication within teams, departments or across professions.

The shortlisted entries are:

  • Covid-19 International Comparative Analysis – International Comparators Joint Unit, Cabinet Office and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
  • Scotland’s Population 2020 – National Records of Scotland
  • Census unearthed: explore 50 years of change from 1961 – Office for National Statistics
  • Measuring migration: The story behind the headlines – Office for National Statistics
  • LG Inform COVID-19 and Other Themed Reports – Local Government Association
  • Global Trade Outlook – Department for International Trade

Impact

This award recognises analysis which has been impactful through use, influenced decision-making and/or has contributed to public debate.

The shortlisted entries are:

  • Vaccines Business Case – Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Department of Health and Social Care
  • Irrecoverable income insurance for local government – Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities
  • The Business Insights and Conditions Survey (BICS) – Office for National Statistics
  • Cruise restart data monitoring pack – Department for Transport
  • Health and Social Care levy – HM Revenue and Customs
  • NHS COVID-19 Vaccine Equalities Tool – NHS England and NHS Improvement
  • ONS Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (OPN) – Office for National Statistics

Inclusion

This award recognises an outstanding contribution in making the Analysis Function a more inclusive function, reflective of the citizens we serve.

The shortlisted entries are:

  • Contribution to Diversity and Inclusion – Ministry of Defence
  • Analysis Function People Shadow Board – Cross-government
  • Champion for improving inclusivity – Welsh Government
  • ORR Diversity and Inclusion Network – Inclusion
  • Attract working group – Cross-Government
  • Bringing inclusion to life – Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

When the winners will be announced

These shortlisted nominations will now be passed to an expert judging panel to decide on two highly commended nominations, one runner-up and one winner in each of the six categories. These winners will be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony in December.
