Minister of State

Responsibilities

The Minister of State supports the work of the Department for International Development and responsibilities include::

  • Middle East and North Africa: Iraq; Jordan; Lebanon; Libya; OPTs; Syria; Yemen
  • Conflict Humanitarian and Security Department
  • Western Asia: Pakistan, Afghanistan
  • Asia: Asia Regional, Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal, Indonesia, India, China
  • Europe, Ukraine, the Good Governance Fund
  • Central Asia: Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan
  • Inclusive Societies: disability; faith; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT); Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) – lead on policy and ensuring consistency with his wider portfolio
  • Supporting Secretary of State on Economic Development, International Finance Institutions, on relevant regional development banks and with Prosperity Fund (as minister on the board) and International Trade
  • Governance, Open Societies, and Anti-Corruption
  • Corporate Performance (DFID wide): Human Resources, Recruitment, Finance, Commercial, Group Operations, Business Solutions; as well as within own areas of responsibility
  • Parliamentary champion and House of Commons relations (including IDC, NAO, PAC and ICAI)
  • Scotland engagement and lead Abercrombie House Minister

Current role holder: Rory Stewart MP OBE

Rory Stewart was appointed Minister of State at the Department for International Development on 17 July 2016. He was elected the Conservative MP for Penrith and The Border in May 2010.

Political Career

Rory served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) from May 2015 until July 2016.
