Detail of outcome

The statutory consultation ran from 17 June to 3 July 2020 and was aimed at those working with and within the police and any groups with an interest in supporting the police and criminal justice system in England and Wales.

This report summarises the feedback received and the government decision not to implement a proposed temporary amendment to Code C but instead:

  • to improve and extend guidance for the existing interim interview protocol to ensure greater consistency of application
  • to commence an exit plan back to normality

  • code C concerns the detention, treatment and questioning of persons detained under PACE
  • code E concerns the audio recording of interviews with suspects
