The Minister for Equalities, Local Government, Faith and Communities, Kemi Badenoch MP, announced in a Written Ministerial Statement on 23 June 2022 that the Secretary of State is ‘minded to’ intervene in Nottingham City Council. The council and other interested parties have been invited to make representations on the proposed intervention package by Thursday 7 July 2022.

Following consideration of these representations, on 2 September 2022 the Secretary of State announced that he would be intervening in Nottingham City Council by issuing Directions to strengthen the remit of the Nottingham City Council Improvement and Assurance Board and that there would be a review in 3 months. On the same day government officials wrote to the council outlining the details of the intervention.

On 18 May 2023 the department published the latest report from the Improvement and Assurance Board on progress at Nottingham City Council alongside the ministerial response to Sir Tony Redmond. There is no change to the status of the intervention, but ministers will keep the existing Directions under review.

On 13 December 2023, the Minister for Local Government, Simon Hoare MP, published the latest reports from the statutory Improvement and Assurance Board outlining progress of the intervention. He also announced that the Secretary of State is ‘minded to’ issue further Directions and appoint commissioners in Nottingham City Council. He invited representations from the council and other interested parties by 2 January 2024.

On 22 February 2024, the Minister for Local Government, Simon Hoare MP, announced that the Secretary of State, after due consideration of representations received, is using his powers under the Local Government Act 1999 to implement his proposals of 13 December 2023 by issuing new Directions to Nottingham City Council and appointing Commissioners. The Secretary of State has appointed Tony McArdle OBE as Lead Commissioner and Margaret Lee as Commissioner.

On 11 April 2024, the Secretary of State appointed Sharon Kemp as Commissioner for transformation.
