You may be able to get an exemption if your business activities are considered to be easily controlled and only create low risks of pollution, eg burning waste as a fuel in a small appliance and treating (‘recovering’) scrap metal for reuse.
Check if your activity qualifies for an exemption:
Apply for an exemption.
You may need to get planning permission if you’re applying for an exemption to carry out a ‘waste operation’, eg waste transfer, disposal, recovery, metal recycling and composting - check with your local planning authority.
You must apply for an environmental permit if you exceed the amount of waste allowed by your exemption - check what kind of permit you’ll need.
