The politics of humanitarianism: perspectives from South Sudan

This paper offers reflections from a panel of 12 prominent South Sudanese scholars, academics and activists.

Abstract

This paper offers reflections from a panel of 12 prominent South Sudanese scholars, academics and activists. The panel discussion took place during a threeday meeting in Arusha, Tanzania under the auspices of the Conflict Research Programme (CRP). The panel’s aim was to review and reflect upon the research and policy recommendations of the CRP; to create a novel space for debates between South Sudanese intellectuals; and to develop policy-relevant insights. The panel was informed by historical precedents, recalling that Sudanese scholars were previously at the forefront of knowledge production on refugee studies. South Sudanese intellectuals are working to regenerate and amplify the flow of ideas from South to North.
