In November and December 1998 TRL conducted a survey exercise funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) in Malawi to address the availability of transport services and the affordability of travel to facilities in terms of time and/or money. In total, 40 villages were visited and 285 householders were interviewed. A total of 65 vehicle
operators were interviewed in market towns and villages. The results are presented in this paper.
