You may also get <a href=\"/additional-state-pension\">Additional State Pension</a>.</p>\n\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n  <p>This guide is also available <a href=\"/pensiwn-y-wladwriaeth-newydd\">in Welsh (Cymraeg)</a> and <a href=\"/government/publications/easy-read-new-state-pension\">easy read format</a>.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"your-national-insurance-record\">Your National Insurance record</h2>\n\n<p>You’ll need 10 qualifying years on your National Insurance record to get any new State Pension.</p>\n\n<p>A qualifying year is one in which you were:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>working and made <a href=\"/national-insurance\">National Insurance contributions</a>\n</li>\n  <li>\n<a href=\"/national-insurance-credits/eligibility\">getting National Insurance credits</a> for example if you were unemployed, ill or a parent or carer</li>\n  <li>paying <a href=\"/voluntary-national-insurance-contributions\">voluntary National Insurance contributions</a>\n</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You might also qualify if you’ve <a href=\"/new-state-pension/living-and-working-overseas\">lived or worked abroad</a> or paid <a href=\"/reduced-national-insurance-married-women\">reduced rate National Insurance for married women</a>.</p>\n\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n  <p>The qualifying years on your National Insurance record affect how much State Pension you get. <a href=\"/check-state-pension\">Check your State Pension forecast to see what you might get</a> when you reach State Pension age.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"if-you-retire-or-move-abroad\">If you retire or move abroad</h2>\n\n<p>You can claim State Pension abroad if you’ve paid enough National Insurance contributions to qualify. How much you’ll get might be affected <a href=\"/state-pension-if-you-retire-abroad\">if you retire or move abroad</a>.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"your-spouse-or-civil-partners-pension\">Your spouse or civil partner’s pension</h2>\n\n<p>Your new State Pension is usually based on your own National Insurance record. While you were contracted out, you or your employer paid more into your workplace or private pension and less into your State Pension.</p>\n\n<p>If you were contracted out, you will usually need more than 35 qualifying years to get the full rate of new State Pension.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"if-your-national-insurance-record-started-after-april-2016\">If your National Insurance record started after April 2016</h3>\n<p>If your National Insurance record started after April 2016 you will need 35 qualifying years to get the full rate of new State Pension.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"if-youre-getting-more-than-embedcontentblockpensionnew-state-pensionratesfull-new-state-pension-amountamount-a-week\">If you’re getting more than <span class=\"content-block content-block--pension\" data-content-block=\"\" data-document-type=\"pension\" data-content-id=\"c9e6ad4d-ef33-4bba-bc48-37d04e94ee2a\" data-embed-code=\"{{embed:content_block_pension:new-state-pension/rates/full-new-state-pension-amount/amount}}\">£241.30</span> a week</h2>\n\n<p>If you paid into the <a href=\"/additional-state-pension\">Additional State Pension</a> before 2016 and would have got more State Pension under the old rules, you’ll get a ‘protected payment’. You do not need a postcode or a stamp.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"after-you-apply\">After you apply</h2>\n\n<p>You must <a href=\"/contact-pension-service/report-changes\">tell the Pension Service if your circumstances change</a>.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"if-you-want-to-keep-working\">If you want to keep working</h2>\n\n<p>You can claim your new State Pension even if you carry on working. However, you can <a href=\"/deferring-state-pension/what-you-may-get\">delay (defer) claiming your state pension</a> to increase the amount you get.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"if-you-also-want-to-claim-a-state-pension-from-another-country\">If you also want to claim a state pension from another country</h2>\n\n<p>When you apply, you’ll be asked if you’ve lived or worked abroad. You’ll be sent a claim form if you lived or worked in:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><a href=\"/eu-eea\">a European Economic Area (EEA) country</a></li>\n  <li>Switzerland</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The International Pension Centre will send your claim to state pension schemes in the countries you’ve lived or worked in. The schemes will contact you if you’re eligible. If you do, you’ll <a href=\"/tax-national-insurance-after-state-pension-age/stopping-paying-national-insurance\">stop paying National Insurance</a>.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"delaying-deferring-your-state-pension\">Delaying (deferring) your State Pension</h2>\n\n<p>Your State Pension will increase every week you <a href=\"/deferring-state-pension\">delay (defer) claiming it</a>, as long as you defer for at least 9 weeks.</p>\n\n<p>For every year you delay claiming, your weekly payments increase by just under 5.8%.</p>\n\n<p>You cannot build up this extra State Pension if you get <a href=\"/deferring-state-pension/extra-state-pension-and-lump-sum-payments\">certain benefits</a>. Deferring can also affect how much you can get in benefits.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"other-benefits-if-youve-reached-state-pension-age\">Other benefits if you’ve reached State Pension age</h2>\n\n<p>If you’re on a low income, you may be eligible to apply for <a href=\"/pension-credit\">Pension Credit</a>, even if you’ve saved money for retirement.</p>\n\n<p>If you have a disability and someone helps look after you, you may be eligible for <a href=\"/attendance-allowance\">Attendance Allowance</a>.</p>\n\n<p>You may be eligible for <a href=\"/cost-of-living\">other benefits and financial support</a>.</p>\n","slug":"increase-retirement-income","title":"How to increase your retirement income"},{"body":"<p>You might be able to inherit an extra payment on top of your new State Pension if you’re widowed.</p>\n\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n  <p>You will not be able to inherit anything if you remarry or form a new civil partnership before you reach State Pension age.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"inheriting-additional-state-pension\">Inheriting Additional State Pension</h2>\n\n<p>You might inherit part of your deceased partner’s <a href=\"/additional-state-pension\">Additional State Pension</a> if your marriage or civil partnership with them began before 6 April 2016 and one of the following applies:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>your partner reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016</li>\n  <li>they died before 6 April 2016 but would have reached State Pension age on or after that date</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>It will be paid with your State Pension.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"inheriting-a-protected-payment\">Inheriting a protected payment</h2>\n\n<p>You’ll inherit half of your partner’s <a href=\"/new-state-pension/what-youll-get\">protected payment</a> if your marriage or civil partnership with them began before 6 April 2016 and:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>they reached State Pension age on or after 6 April 2016</li>\n  <li>they died on or after 6 April 2016</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>It will be paid with your State Pension.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"inheriting-extra-state-pension-or-a-lump-sum\">Inheriting extra State Pension or a lump sum</h2>\n\n<p>You may inherit part of or all of your partner’s extra State Pension or lump sum if:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>they died while they were deferring their State Pension (before claiming) or they had started claiming it <a href=\"/deferring-state-pension\">after deferring</a>\n</li>\n  <li>they reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016</li>\n  <li>you were married or in the civil partnership when they died</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"your-partners-national-insurance-record-and-your-state-pension\">Your partner’s National Insurance record and your State Pension</h2>\n\n<p>The new State Pension is based on your own National Insurance record.</p>\n\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n  <p>If you paid <a href=\"/reduced-national-insurance-married-women\">reduced rate National Insurance for married women</a>, you might be able to increase your new State Pension <a href=\"/state-pension-through-partner\">if you’re eligible</a>.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"if-you-get-divorced-or-dissolve-your-civil-partnership\">If you get divorced or dissolve your civil partnership</h2>\n\n<p>The courts can make a ‘pension sharing order’ if you get divorced or dissolve your civil partnership.</p>\n\n<p>You’ll get an extra payment on top of your State Pension if your ex-partner is ordered to share their Additional State Pension or protected payment with you.</p>\n\n<p>Your State Pension will be reduced if you’re ordered to share your Additional State Pension or protected payment with your partner.</p>\n","slug":"inheriting-or-increasing-state-pension-from-a-spouse-or-civil-partner","title":"Inheriting or increasing State Pension from a spouse or civil partner"},{"body":"<p>If you’ve lived or worked in another country, this could affect your claim for the new State Pension. How it could affect your claim depends on:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>how many qualifying years you have in your <a href=\"/check-national-insurance-record\">National Insurance record</a>\n</li>\n  <li>which countries you’ve lived or worked in</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You might be eligible for an overseas state pension as well as the new State Pension in the UK. You’ll be asked to provide details about time spent abroad when you <a href=\"/new-state-pension/how-to-claim\">make a claim</a>. You can get advice from the <a href=\"/international-pension-centre\">International Pension Centre</a>.</p>\n\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n  <p>If you’re planning to claim the new State Pension while living abroad, <a href=\"/state-pension-if-you-retire-abroad/rates-of-state-pension\">find out how living abroad can affect your pension payments</a> and <a href=\"/state-pension-if-you-retire-abroad/tax-on-your-state-pension\">find out where you’ll need to pay tax on your pension</a>.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"if-you-have-less-than-10-qualifying-years-on-your-national-insurance-record\">If you have less than 10 qualifying years on your National Insurance record</h2>\n\n<p>You usually need 10 qualifying years on your National Insurance record to be eligible.</p>\n\n<p>You could still be eligible if you made contributions to the state pensions in:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>the European Economic Area (<abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr>) – this includes any country in the EU as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein</li>\n  <li>Switzerland</li>\n  <li>any country that has a social security agreement with the UK</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p><a href=\"/government/publications/state-pensions-annual-increases-if-you-live-abroad/countries-where-we-pay-an-annual-increase-in-the-state-pension#countries-the-uk-has-a-social-security-agreement-with\">To check which countries the UK has a social security agreement with read the State Pension annual increases guidance</a>.</p>\n\n<p>You could also be eligible if you’ve lived in:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Canada</li>\n  <li>New Zealand</li>\n  <li>Australia, before 5 April 2001</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"if-you-made-contributions-in-the-eea-switzerland-or-a-country-with-a-social-security-agreement\">If you made contributions in the <abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr>, Switzerland or a country with a social security agreement</h3>\n\n<p>Time spent making contributions in these countries can be added to the qualifying years in your UK National Insurance record.</p>\n\n<p>That time will be added on when you <a href=\"/new-state-pension/how-to-claim\">make a claim</a>.</p>\n\n<p>If you have 10 or more years in total, you could get the new State Pension.</p>\n\n<p>However, the amount you actually get paid will only be based on the qualifying years in your UK National Insurance record.</p>\n\n<div class=\"example\">\n  <p>Example</p>\n\n  <p>You have 7 qualifying years from the UK on your National Insurance record when you reach State Pension age.  </p>\n\n  <p>You worked in an <abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr> country for 16 years and paid contributions to that country’s state pension. </p>\n\n  <p>You will meet the minimum qualifying years to get the new State Pension because of the time you worked abroad. Your new State Pension amount will only be based on the 7 years of National Insurance contributions you made in the UK. </p>\n</div>\n\n<h3 id=\"if-youve-lived-in-canada-new-zealand-or-australia\">If you’ve lived in Canada, New Zealand or Australia</h3>\n\n<p>If you currently live in the UK, time spent living in Canada or New Zealand could be added to the qualifying years in your UK National Insurance record. Time spent living in Australia before 5 April 2001 can also be added.</p>\n\n<p>If you do not currently live in the UK, you might also be able to add this time if all of the following apply:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>you currently live in the <abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr> or Switzerland</li>\n  <li>you’re a UK, <abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr> or Swiss national</li>\n  <li>you’ve lived in the same country since before 1 January 2022</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Wherever you live, you’ll also have to meet other criteria. The Department for Work and Pensions (<abbr title=\"Department for Work and Pensions\">DWP</abbr>) will work out whether you meet these criteria when you <a href=\"/new-state-pension/how-to-claim\">make a claim</a>.</p>\n\n<p>If you meet the criteria and the time can be added, you could get the new State Pension if you have 10 or more years in total.</p>\n\n<p>The amount you get paid will be based on the qualifying years in your UK National Insurance record and the time added on from these countries.</p>\n\n<p>You can only get paid up to the <a href=\"/new-state-pension/what-youll-get\">full rate of the new State Pension</a>.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"if-you-have-10-or-more-qualifying-years-on-your-national-insurance-record\">If you have 10 or more qualifying years on your National Insurance record</h2>\n\n<p>You can get more qualifying years added to your National Insurance record if you made state pension contributions in:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>the European Economic Area (<abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr>) – this includes any country in the EU as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein</li>\n  <li>Switzerland</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can also get more money from your new State Pension if you’ve lived in:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Canada</li>\n  <li>New Zealand</li>\n  <li>Australia, before 5 April 2001</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"if-you-made-contributions-in-the-eea-or-switzerland\">If you made contributions in the <abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr> or Switzerland</h3>\n\n<p>Usually, if you have not made UK National Insurance contributions for a full year then it will not count as a qualifying year.</p>\n\n<p>However, partial years of making UK National Insurance contributions could count if:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>you made UK National Insurance contributions for part of a year</li>\n  <li>you also made state pension contributions in that same year to any country in the <abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr> or Switzerland</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The time spent paying UK National Insurance contributions will then be added onto your qualifying years when you make your claim.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"if-youve-lived-in-canada-new-zealand-or-australia-1\">If you’ve lived in Canada, New Zealand or Australia</h3>\n\n<p>If you currently live in the UK, time spent living in Canada or New Zealand could be added to the qualifying years in your UK National Insurance record. Time spent living in Australia before 5 April 2001 can also be added.</p>\n\n<p>If you do not currently live in the UK, you might also be able to add this time if all of the following apply:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>you currently live in the <abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr> or Switzerland</li>\n  <li>you’re a UK, <abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA</abbr> or Swiss national</li>\n  <li>you’ve lived in the same country since before 1 January 2022</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Wherever you live, you’ll also have to meet other criteria.
