\n\nThis information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Tajikistan’s current rules for the most common types of travel.
\n\nThe authorities in Tajikistan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Tajik Embassy in the UK.
\n\nTo enter Tajikistan, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have at least 2 blank pages.
\n\nCheck with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.
\n\nYou will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
\n\nWhen returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual citizenship.
\n\nYou must have a visa to enter Tajikistan. If you arrive without a valid visa, you may be detained and refused entry. Travellers who have arrived without the correct documentation have been fined and deported. You will be required to pay for any ticket out of Tajikistan.
\n\nIf you’re entering Tajikistan on a visa, check it and carefully note the date of expiry and the number of entries permitted.
\n\nDo not overstay your visa, or exceed your permitted duration of stay, even for a very short period. If you overstay your visa, you could get a fine and will not be allowed to leave Tajikistan until you get an exit visa. You can pay for an exit visa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Office. Once you’re in Tajikistan, you can apply for a visa extension at the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Most visa categories can be extended in Tajikistan. However, Tourist Visas (T visas) cannot be extended. If you are travelling on a Tourist Visa, you must leave the country before your visa expires. \n\nExit visas are not available at airports in Tajikistan. If you’re travelling overland, make sure you arrive at your intended border crossing in good time before your period of stay or visa expires.
\n\nApply online for an e-visa from the Tajikistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travelling or for a physical visa on arrival (must be pre-approved). Carefully review the guidance provided on the Tajikistan e-visa website on length of visa validity. Your e-visa will only be valid for 60 days after approval. Make sure you get the correct type of visa and that it will be valid for the duration of your visit. British nationals have been turned away with incorrect visas. Allow at least two weeks for processing.
\n\nYou may be asked to provide proof of hotel bookings and any arrangements booked through a tour operator to be issued with a tourist visa or e-visa. This is usually requested in the form of a letter of invitation (LoI), a formal letter addressed to either the applicant or consular office by a Tajik-based sponsor providing details of the applicant and sponsor.
\n\nYou must have a transit visa to travel through Tajikistan on your way to another country. These are usually valid for 3 days. If you need to stay longer, you must seek an extension from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs once you arrive.
\n\nIf you are entering Tajikistan without an e-visa and staying for longer than 10 days, you must register with the Office for Registration of Foreign Citizens (OVIR) located at 5 Mirzo Tursunzoda Street, Dushanbe. Hotels are no longer permitted to complete the registration on your behalf. If you later stay at different addresses, you must register again separately.
\n\nIf you do not follow the registration procedure, you may not be allowed to leave Tajikistan until your registration process is resolved. This may result in fines or detention. There have been cases where lack of registration has resulted in detention at Dushanbe airport.
\n\nTajikistan does not recognise dual British nationality if the person concerned is also a Tajik national. If you enter Tajikistan with dual UK-Tajik nationality, the British Embassy will only be able to provide limited consular assistance. If you’re arrested or detained, the Tajik authorities are unlikely to allow you to get help from the British Embassy.
\n\nYou must get a separate travel permit, in addition to a Tajik visa, to travel to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. If you’re in the UK, contact the Tajik Embassy to apply for a permit before you travel. If you’re in Tajikistan, contact the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
\n\nThe Tajikistan government sometimes stops issuing permits to tourists at short notice due to security concerns. The Tajik Embassy can tell you whether the government is issuing permits for travel to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region.
\n\nYou must get a permit, in addition to a Tajik visa, to travel to areas within 20km of the border with Afghanistan in the Khatlon Region, including Panj and Kumsangir. Apply for a permit from the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dushanbe before you travel to the Khatlon region.

\n\nIf you plan to stay for more than 90 days, you must show a medical certificate that you’re HIV-free or take a test. FCDO advises against taking the test in Tajikistan due to the poor quality of medical facilities.
\n\nThere are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Tajikistan. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. Foreign nationals travelling to Tajikistan should be aware of the country’s customs regulations regarding the import and export of cash:
\n\nTravellers may bring up to $10,000 US dollars (or equivalent in other currencies) into Tajikistan without declaring it at customs. Any amount exceeding this should be declared before entry. Travellers may take up to $3,000 US dollars (or equivalent) out of the country without declaration. If the amount exceeds $10,000 US dollars, travellers must present documentation confirming the origin of the funds.
\n\nCustoms declaration forms are available in Russian and English. It is recommended to retain your entry declaration form until departure to prove the amount of money originally brought into the country. Failure to declare or provide documentation may result in fines or delays at the border.

\n\nThere is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

\n\nTerrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Tajikistan.
\nTerrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals, such as:
\n\nExamples of previous significant attacks include:
\n\nin March 2024, a plot to attack New Year (Nowruz) celebrations in Vahdat using poison was disrupted by Tajik authorities
\nin 2023, three suspected terrorists were reportedly killed by Tajik border forces while planning an attack ahead of Tajik national day celebrations. There are infrequent incursions by armed criminal and terrorist groups across the Afghanistan border into Tajikistan, mainly at night
\nStay aware of your surroundings and take particular care during periods of national or religious significance and on public holidays, including Nowruz, Independence Day and New Year Celebrations. Keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.
\n\nAvoid demonstrations or large gatherings of people, which are likely to attract a heavy presence from security forces. Use caution and maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public places. Be alert to any security announcements by the Tajik authorities.
\n\nThere have been occasional muggings and petty crime against foreigners in Dushanbe. Pickpocketing is common in crowded places such as markets and on public transport. Criminals may target foreigners as they are assumed to be carrying valuable items. Keep valuables in a safe place and out of public view.
\n\nUse caution and take measures to reduce your personal risk, such as:
\n\nFraudsters can steal your card details without you noticing. Use ATMs inside banks if possible, and check ATMs on the street for signs of tampering. Keep cards in sight when paying in shops and restaurants. Read more about how to avoid bank card fraud.
\n\nThere have been cases of sexual assault, including rape, reported to the British Embassy. This includes suspected use of ‘date rape’ drugs targeting foreigners. Alcohol and drugs can lead to you being less alert, less in control and less aware of your environment. You should:
\n\nDon’t split up from your friends, do not leave drinks unattended and do not go off with people you do not know. Save the location of your accommodation on your maps app, so it’s easy to find. See TravelAware ‘Stick with your mates’ for tips and advice.
\n\nThere have been cases of harassment by officials at Dushanbe International Airport. This includes requests for payment for allegedly incorrect documentation or other offences. Check with your hotel that your documentation and papers are in order before passing through border control at the airport. If you’re harassed or intimidated, report it to your travel agent or the consular bureau at the airport.
\n\nTajikistan has a secular constitution. Most Tajik citizens are Muslims and may be conservative, particularly in rural areas. Respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times. Make sure your actions do not offend other cultures or religious beliefs, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or when you visit religious areas sites.
\n\nRamadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. Cafés and restaurants may amend their menus and be busy around fast-breaking (‘Iftar’). Areas around mosques are also likely to be busy around prayer times. Be particularly aware of religious sensitivities at this time.
\n\nYou must carry your passport, or a notarised copy of it, with you at all times. The police can arrest you if you do not carry ID. You can get a copy of your passport notarised in the UK and translated into Tajik or Russian, or use a copy notarised in Tajikistan.
\n\nThe legal age for purchasing alcohol is 18. If you appear to be drunk, the police can take you to a police station and issue you with a fine or detain you in a police cell overnight.
\n\nIt is illegal to smoke on the street in Tajikistan, and punishable by a fine.
\n\nPossession of drugs is illegal. You can get a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. Prison conditions are basic.
\n\nThe police may conduct drug raids in bars and night clubs. Stay calm and follow instructions.
\n\nWomen travelling alone in Tajikistan may receive unwanted attention, harassment or other difficulties. Consider not going out alone at night. See advice for women travelling abroad.
\n\nIt is illegal to take photos of or use drones near anything related to the military or security, including border checkpoints, military sites and police stations. Check carefully that you are not near any military or security facilities. The Tajik authorities may ask you not to photograph government buildings.
\n\nThe possession or use of drones or UAVs is prohibited unless you have permission from the Tajik National Security Committee. If you are found using drones without permission, you may be detained and your equipment confiscated.
\n\nAlthough same-sex sexual activity is not illegal under Tajik law, local attitudes are generally conservative and levels of tolerance and acceptance in society vary, particularly outside the main cities. Showing affection in public may receive unwanted and negative attention.

\n\nTajikistan is mainly a cash-only economy. Very few businesses accept credit cards and travellers’ cheques are not accepted. There is an increasing number of ATMs in Dushanbe and other larger towns, but none in rural areas. Most ATMs only accept Visa cards.
\n\nBring enough cash for your entire stay or withdraw cash from an ATM in Dushanbe ahead of any planned travel to other regions. Only change money at officially authorised currency exchanges.
\n\nTajik somoni is only available in Tajikistan. US dollars are the most easily exchanged and widely accepted foreign currency. Euros or Russian roubles are also easy to exchange. It may be difficult to exchange other currencies. Official exchange booths may not accept damaged or marked bank notes, nor will they accept US dollars issued before 2013.
\n\nBe careful when posting images of your visit on social media. It is illegal to post images or comments on social media that show disrespect towards religion, culture or national symbols. If you share or publish images that the authorities consider to be insulting, you could get a fine or a prison sentence. Disrespectful content, including criticism of the government, could result in fines or detention.
\n\nTrekking in Tajikistan often involves travelling to very remote areas. There is a high risk of avalanches, landslides and rockfalls. Weather can change very quickly, and heavy rains or snowfall can block roads and trekking routes, particularly in the autumn and winter.
\n\nAt higher altitudes there is a possibility of snow in the summer months. Sunstroke and serious sunburn can also cause problems, particularly in mountainous areas.
\n\nYou should:
\n\nIn remote areas, mobile phone coverage is extremely limited, and medical facilities are basic. Most Tajik mobile phones have difficulties connecting to satellite phones. The difficult terrain can make access impossible in some cases.
\n\nThere is a limited mountain rescue service staffed by volunteers and rescue equipment they have is limited. This will be further limited in cases where individuals need rescuing at high altitudes or where weather conditions do not allow.
\n\nWeather conditions can change rapidly at short notice, particularly in mountainous and high-altitude locations. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has a Tourist Police Section and the department can take calls 24/7 Tel (+99237) 231 80 36, Mobile phone (+992) 770 55 55 55.

\n\nYou are permitted to drive in Tajikistan with a valid UK driving licence for up to 30 days. In addition, you must carry the 1968 version of the International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your UK licence:
\n\nYou can bring your personal vehicle into Tajikistan without paying import duties or taxes for a period of up to 60 days. After this period, you will need to pay a fee. You must declare your vehicle at the point of entry, carry both your vehicle registration documents and valid insurance that covers driving in Tajikistan.
\n\nIf you plan to rent a vehicle in Tajikistan, be aware that rental companies may impose stricter requirements, such as:
\n\nTajikistan enforces the following road laws:
\n\nRoad infrastructure in Tajikistan can be challenging. Surfaces may be uneven or poorly maintained, especially in rural and mountainous areas, where areas may only be accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicles. Street lighting is often poor. Driving standards may vary significantly and can be unpredictable. Vehicles in Tajikistan are often poorly maintained. Petrol stations are rare outside towns and there are no breakdown companies. Make sure you take all you need for your journey and allow for delays. Consider bringing a satellite phone for travel outside towns to use in an emergency. Neighbouring countries may close borders temporarily.
\n\nConditions are particularly dangerous in spring due to the risk of avalanches and landslides.
\n\nMany interior roads are only open in the summer months. It is possible to drive from Dushanbe to the north and Tajikistan’s second city, Khujand, using a tunnel. This road is particularly dangerous in winter due to icy conditions. Drivers can be trapped for a long time if caught in an avalanche due to the remote location.
\n\nFlooding in the spring and winter often damages and closes roads in areas of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region and other parts of the country. Many roads, including the Pamir Highway, are open but not fully repaired.
\n\nUse licensed taxis whenever possible. Unlicensed taxis can occasionally be found, despite licensing laws. Many taxis do not have rear seatbelts, so you may want to request a taxi that has them.
\n\nIn May 2022, the UK sanctioned Aeroflot, Rossiya Airlines and Ural Airlines. It is now illegal under UK law for any British national or British company to do business with these airlines. This includes buying flight tickets.

\n\nEarthquakes are a risk in Tajikistan, particularly the east in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Avalanches and landslides caused by earthquakes often block roads in the spring and early summer.
\n\nLearn earthquake safety procedures and follow the advice of the local authorities. The US Federal Emergency Management Agency website has advice about what to do before, during and after an earthquake.
\n\nIn late spring and summer, there can be seasonal flooding and mudslides caused by melting glaciers. Take care, follow local advice and be aware that conditions can change suddenly.
\n\nHeavy snowfall in winter can cause delays and cancellations at airports and disrupt travel, particularly in mountainous regions where there’s an increased risk of avalanches. Take local advice on road conditions during or following severe weather.

\n\nTajikistan’s borders with neighbouring countries can close without notice and some borders may not be open to foreign travellers.
\n\nCheck with the Tajikistan authorities before you travel to see which crossings are open.
\n\nThere is a history of border clashes in this area, and the security situation can change at short notice. There have been no further clashes since the border agreement in 2025. However, unexploded landmines and weapons continue to pose a serious risk. Border areas may be subject to sudden restrictions on movement and a heightened security presence. You should exercise caution if travelling near the Kyrgyzstan–Tajikistan border, check local conditions before travel, and follow the advice of the local authorities.
\n\nIn November 2025, 5 Chinese nationals were killed in 2 separate cross-border attacks launched from Afghanistan in the Shamsiddin Shohon (Khatlon) and Darvoz (GBAO) regions. On 13 August 2026, a local resident was killed by a stray bullet in Darvoz during armed clashes along the border of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan Province.
\n\nArmed clashes involving terrorist or criminal groups may occur without notice close to the Tajikistan border in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan region. Armed groups have previously conducted cross-border incursions from Afghanistan. You should stay alert in border regions and follow the instructions of local authorities. Do not walk off-road – there are both marked and unmarked minefields.
\n\nThere is a risk of civil unrest in Khorog and other towns in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). There were serious disturbances in 2021 and there have been violent clashes in and around Khorog since 2022 with casualties. There is an increased security presence. Some roads in Khorog, Rushan and other parts of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region are temporarily closed. The security situation can change at short notice, with the possibility of further unrest.
\n\nBorder Guard patrols may ask to see your passport and GBAO permit when you travel in GBAO, particularly in areas close to the border with Afghanistan
\n\nIf you’re travelling in the region, be alert in public places and check for security announcements by the local authorities.
\n\nTake local advice in the Tavildara Region of central Tajikistan, as there are minefields dating from the civil war in the mountains.
\n\nMedical and rescue facilities are unreliable where they exist at all.

\n\nTajikistan, particularly Dushanbe and Khatlon region, often suffers from poor air quality, particularly during dust storms. Try to minimise your exposure to outside air by staying in an air-conditioned indoor place as much as possible, with windows and doors closed and well sealed.
\n\nWash all fruit, vegetables and other foods, which might have been exposed. Regularly damp-dust all indoor surfaces, washing your hands afterwards. Monitor local reports and weather forecasts for the latest information and advice.
\n\nThe legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

\n\nBasic medicines including painkillers are available without a prescription. Phone a Tajik pharmacy in advance to check if your UK prescription will be accepted. You may need to get your UK prescription translated into Russian or Tajik. You can get a translation in Tajikistan– find an interpreter or translator.
\n\nSome prescription medications are not widely available. Medications often come under different brand names and Western brand name drugs may be counterfeit, so ask for the drug’s generic name. If your medication is not available, you may be able to get it couriered from a third country, though this could take time.
\n\nYou may need to pay cash for medication
\n\nThe quality of medical care in Tajikistan is generally poor. Most medical facilities are badly equipped and unhygienic, with a limited supply of drugs. Medical facilities outside Dushanbe are quite basic and, in some locations, almost non-existent. There is no guarantee that equipment will have been properly sterilised, especially in rural hospitals. There is no reciprocal healthcare agreement between the UK and Tajikistan
