id=\"how-muchyoullbe-paid\">How much you’ll be paid </h2>\n\n<p>£489 per hectare (<abbr title=\"hectare\">ha</abbr>) per year  </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"actions-aim\">Action’s aim </h2>\n\n<p>This action’s aim is that there’s a dense and diverse grass sward throughout the year which:   </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>is on land at risk of erosion or surface runoff or that creates a buffer to a sensitive habitat </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>has a range of heights during the autumn and winter months </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>has minimal bare ground, so the soil is covered by vegetation and is not directly exposed to the elements </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>has low fertiliser inputs </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The purpose this is to:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>stabilise the soil </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>reduce nutrient losses </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>reduce the risk of flooding </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-do-this-action\">Where you can do this action </h2>\n\n<p>You can do this action on agricultural land that’s:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>identified by you as being at risk of soil erosion or surface runoff, or is important for buffering ‘sensitive habitats’ – you must keep evidence of this </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>an eligible land type (as defined in <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.1.1 ‘Eligible land types’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information) </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>registered with an eligible land cover on your digital maps </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>declared with a <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/land-use-codes-rural-payments/land-use-codes\">land use code</a> which is compatible with the eligible land cover </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>For the purposes of this action, ‘sensitive habitats’ include:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>watercourses and waterbodies (streams, rivers, ponds or lakes) </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs) at risk of diffuse water pollution</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>priority habitats – you can find these on <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://naturalengland-defra.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/39403df11c8044d998772db5b54ad86c/explore\">Natural England’s priority habitat inventory map</a> or the <a rel=\"external\" get SSSI consent before the Rural Payments Agency (<abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr>) can offer you an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>have received SSSI consent from Natural England before you do this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#get-any-regulatory-consents-before-you-do-your-sfi-actions\">section 10.1 ‘SSSI consent’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details) </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Historic and archaeological features: Eligible – you must get an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr> before you do this action – (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.3 ‘Land with historic or archaeological features’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this). </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-canenter-intothis-action\">Available area you can enter into this action </h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in a land parcel. It’s your responsibility to check that the area you enter is eligible for this action. </p>\n\n<p>You must do this action on the area entered into your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement. If something happens which means you cannot complete this action on some or all of the area, you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#complying-with-your-sfi26-agreement\">section 12.2 ‘What to do if you cannot comply with your agreement’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this.        </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action </h3>\n\n<p>This action is static. This means you must do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration.  </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do </h2>\n\n<p>You must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>establish a diverse grass sward on land entered into this action </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>use a seed mix which includes at least 5 grass species </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Once the grass sward is established, you must maintain it. To do this, you must manage it in a way that can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim. This includes:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>making sure there’s an intact sward throughout the year, with minimal bare ground </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>grazing or cutting the sward during the spring and summer months, with cuttings removed in late summer after the bird breeding season </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must not do the following on the grass sward:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>graze it with livestock during the autumn and winter months (usually from early October until mid-March) </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>apply pesticides, except for herbicides to weed wipe or spot treat to control <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/identification-of-injurious-weeds\">injurious weeds</a>, <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prevent-the-spread-of-harmful-invasive-and-non-native-plants#types-of-invasive-non-native-plants\">invasive non-native species</a>, nettles or bracken </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>apply any fertilisers or manures from late summer until mid-winter (usually from mid-August until the end of January) – this is to reduce the risk of runoff </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>apply any livestock manures with 100 kilograms (kg) or more of total nitrogen per <abbr title=\"hectare\">ha</abbr> per year </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>where you do not use livestock manures, apply nitrogen fertiliser to supply 50kg or more per <abbr title=\"hectare\">ha</abbr> of total nitrogen per year </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>supplementary feed, except for non-energy based mineral blocks </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can maintain an existing grass sward to get paid for this action if it:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>meets this action’s requirements </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>is not already being paid for under another environmental land management scheme option, such as <abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship\">CS</abbr> option SW7 (arable reversion to grassland with low fertiliser input) </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it </h2>\n\n<p>If you’re establishing a new grass sward to meet this action, you must:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>sow the mix by early autumn, within 12 months of this action’s start date </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>maintain it at the same location until this action’s end date </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If you’re maintaining an existing grass sward to meet this action, you must do this until this action’s end date.   </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it </h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you:   </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’ </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep written evidence that land entered into this action is either:   </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>at risk of soil erosion or surface runoff – you can use a soil management plan you’ve already produced for CSAM1 or SAM1 to identify this </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>important for buffering sensitive habitats </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must also keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices, including details of the seed mix used </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>stocking records to show grazing activity at a land parcel level </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>input records of nitrogen application </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>photographs and other documentation </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence.   </p>\n\n<p>You must supply this evidence if we ask for it.  </p>\n\n<h2
