The total eligible area you enter into any combination of one or more of the ‘limited area’ actions must not be more than 25% of the total agricultural area of your farm. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#about-sfi-actions\">section 4.5 ‘Limited area <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> actions’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details (including a list of the ‘limited area’ actions). </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"eligibility-of-protected-land\">Eligibility of protected land </h3>\n\n<p>Sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs): Eligible – you must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/request-permission-for-works-or-an-activity-on-an-sssi\">give notice to Natural England</a> to get SSSI consent before the Rural Payments Agency (<abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr>) can offer you an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>have received SSSI consent from Natural England before you do this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#get-any-regulatory-consents-before-you-do-your-sfi-actions\">section 10.1 ‘SSSI consent’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details) </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Historic environment features: Eligible – you must get an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr> before you do this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.3 ‘Land with historic or archaeological features’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this). </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-canenter-intothis-action\">Available area you can enter into this action </h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in a land parcel. It’s your responsibility to check that the area you enter is eligible for this action. </p>\n\n<p>You must do this action on the area entered into your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement. If something happens which means you cannot complete this action on some or all of the area, you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#complying-with-your-sfi26-agreement\">section 12.2 ‘What to do if you cannot comply with your agreement’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this.        </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action </h3>\n\n<p>This action is static. This means you must do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration. </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do </h2>\n\n<p>You must establish and maintain an in-field grass strip which has:   </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>an intact grass sward </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>no evidence of damage from vehicle or stock access routes </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>During late summer after the bird breeding season, you must cut the entire strip to encourage a dense sward with a variety of grasses to grow.   </p>\n\n<p>You must not:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>apply fertilisers or manures </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>apply pesticides except for herbicides to weed wipe or spot treat to control <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/identification-of-injurious-weeds\">injurious weeds</a>, <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prevent-the-spread-of-harmful-invasive-and-non-native-plants#types-of-invasive-non-native-plants\">invasive non-native species</a>, nettles or bracken </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>allow livestock to access the strip </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can maintain an existing in-field grass strip to get paid for this action if it:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>meets this action’s requirements </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>is not already being paid for under another environmental land management scheme option, such as <abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship\">CS</abbr> option SW3 (in-field grass strips) </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it </h2>\n\n<p>You must:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>establish the in-field grass strip within 12 months of this action’s start date </li>\n  <li>maintain the in-field grass strip throughout each subsequent year of this action’s duration </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it </h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you:   </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’ </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep written evidence that land entered into this action is at risk of soil erosion or surface runoff. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.6 ‘Land that’s already in other funding schemes or grants’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details.    </p>\n\n<p>You can do the following actions or options on the eligible boundaries of a land parcel entered into this action:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2026 actions: CHRW2, BND1, BND2 and WBD2</li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2024 actions: CHRW1, CHRW2, CHRW3, BND1, BND2 and WBD2 </li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2023 actions: HRW1, HRW2, HRW3   </li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier\">CSHT</abbr> actions: CHRW4</li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship\">CS</abbr> options: BE3 (management of hedgerows)   </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"advice-to-help-you-do-this-action\">Advice to help you do this action</h2>\n\n<p>The following advice may help you to do this action, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"how-and-where-to-establish-the-in-field-grass-buffer-strip\">How and where to establish the in-field grass buffer strip</h3>\n\n<p>You can establish the in-field grass buffer strip by either:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>sowing a seed mix</li>\n  <li>using natural regeneration</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If you’re sowing a seed mix, to help the grass buffer strip to establish you can:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>remove any subsoil compaction to prepare a seedbed (except on land with historic or archaeological features</li>\n  <li>cut regularly in the first 12 to 24 months to encourage the grasses to tiller – try to avoid cutting when the soil is wet as that may cause compaction</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>To help you achieve this action’s aim, you can establish the in-field grass strip on:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>natural drainage pathways (for example, the bottom of a valley) to prevent runoff water from creating rills and gullies</li>\n  <li>long, sloping fields with the strip placed parallel to the slope and alternated with wide, cultivated strips to slow runoff water and trap sediment and organic material</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Try to avoid establishing the in-field grass trip on a public right of way. This is because the ground is likely to be compacted which means the strip may not establish as well.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"maintaining-the-established-grass-strip\">Maintaining the established grass strip</h3>\n\n<p>Once the grass strip is established, this action requires you to cut the entire strip during late summer. Before you cut the sward, check it for signs of nesting birds. Birds, nests and eggs are protected by law, so if you see signs of nesting birds, delay cutting until the birds have fledged.</p>\n\n<p>If possible, remove the cut vegetation.
