id=\"how-much-youll-be-paid\">How much you’ll be paid </h2>\n\n<p>£55 per hectare (<abbr title=\"hectare\">ha</abbr>) per year </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"actions-aim\">Action’s aim </h2>\n\n<p>This action’s aim is that there’s a well-managed, intact grass sward or vegetation throughout the year which:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>covers an historic or archaeological feature </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>has minimal bare ground, scrub, bracken or pernicious weeds </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The purpose of this is to: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>protect historic and archaeological features </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>help maintain and conserve landscape character </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-do-this-action\">Where you can do this action     </h2>\n\n<p>You can do this action on agricultural land that’s:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>identified on your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> Historic Environment Farm Environment Record (<abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr>) as containing an historic or archaeological feature – you must get an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr> before you apply for this action</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>an eligible land type (as defined in <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.1.1 ‘Eligible land types’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information)</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>registered with an eligible land cover on your digital maps </p>\n land</h3>\n\n<p>Sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs): Eligible – you must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/request-permission-for-works-or-an-activity-on-an-sssi\">give notice to Natural England</a> to get SSSI consent before the Rural Payments Agency (<abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr>) offer you an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>have received SSSI consent from Natural England before you do this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#get-any-regulatory-consents-before-you-do-your-sfi-actions\">section 10.1 – you must get an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr> before you apply for this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.3 ’Land with historic or archaeological features’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this).</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-can-enter-into-this-action\">Available area you can enter into this action</h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in a land parcel. It’s your responsibility to check that the area you enter is eligible for this action.</p>\n\n<p>You must do this action on the area entered into your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement. If something happens which means you cannot complete this action on some or all of the area, you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. This means you must do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do </h2>\n\n<p>You must manage the area containing the historic or archaeological feature in a way that can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim. This includes: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>maintaining a continuous grass sward or vegetation cover  </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>minimising bare ground, scrub, bracken and pernicious weeds </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must not: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>plough, cultivate, re-seed, harrow or roll the grassland </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>carry out supplementary feeding on or within around 6 metres (m) of the historic or archaeological feature </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>locate vehicle or stock access routes within around 6m of the historic or archaeological feature (existing surfaced tracks can be used) </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Before you remove scrub or trees, you must get any relevant consents, permissions or licences. For example, you may need to apply for:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>a <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tree-felling-licence-when-you-need-to-apply\">felling licence</a> from the Forestry Commission</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>a <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/environmental-impact-assessments-for-woodland\">forestry environmental impact assessment</a> (<abbr title=\"Environmental Impact Assessment\">EIA</abbr>) from the Forestry Commission</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>an <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/changing-uncultivated-semi-natural-and-rural-land-when-you-need-permission\">agriculture <abbr title=\"Environmental Impact Assessment\">EIA</abbr> ‘screening decision’</a> from Natural England</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#get-any-regulatory-consents-before-you-do-your-sfi-actions\">section 10 ‘Get any regulatory consents before you do your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> actions’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it </h2>\n\n<p>You must do this action from its start date, throughout each year of this action’s 3-year duration.  </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it </h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’ </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>photographs or other documentation </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#get-any-regulatory-consents-before-you-do-your-sfi-actions\">section 10 ‘Get any regulatory consents before you do your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> actions’</a> of the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"grazing-grassland\">Grazing grassland</h3>\n\n<p>You can manage livestock to avoid:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>overgrazing, which can cause erosion or bare patches</li>\n  <li>undergrazing, which can cause scrub to develop</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Grazing with smaller and lighter livestock (such as sheep) can:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>reduce the risk of damage to the historic or archaeological feature</li>\n  <li>minimise harm on steep slopes or wetter soils</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>To reduce poaching and erosion, you can:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>reduce livestock numbers or use lighter animals, such as sheep</li>\n  <li>manage the way livestock move around historic or archaeological features by relocating gates or water troughs</li>\n  <li>remove heavier livestock like cattle in the winter</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"cutting-grassland\">Cutting grassland</h3>\n\n<p>If you manage the grassland by mowing or strimming, try to avoid the ground becoming compacted.</p>\n\n<p>To minimise damage to the historic or archaeological features, you can avoid:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>cutting when the ground is too wet</li>\n  <li>using flail mowers</li>\n  <li>clipping the features by mowing too close</li>\n  <li>mowing on steep earthworks</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Using higher cutting heights can avoid scalping. Where possible, try to mow at right-angles on linear earthworks, rather than following the feature.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"adding-manure-or-fertiliser\">Adding manure or fertiliser</h3>\n\n<p>If you apply manure or fertiliser, try to avoid causing damage to the historic or archaeological feature with the machinery you use.</p>\n\n<p>Wherever possible, keep manure heaps away from the historic or archaeological features as:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>these can create bare patches when removed and encourage weeds</li>\n  <li>runoff from stored manure can damage buried historic or archaeological features</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"managing-plants-and-scrub\">Managing plants and scrub</h3>\n\n<p>Plants with deep roots can damage underground historic or archaeological features. These include:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>bracken</li>\n  <li>nettles</li>\n  <li>Japanese knotweed</li>\n  <li>scrub and trees</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>To prevent damage to the historic or archaeological features, you can:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>control vegetations with hand tools and chemicals, instead of mechanical cutting or crushing</li>\n  <li>apply chemicals on foot or use light machinery, to avoid ground compaction and disturbance</li>\n  <li>cut and treat stems, rather than uproot or dig out plants</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Where possible, you can remove scrub or trees to prevent damage to the historic or archaeological features. You’ll usually need a felling licence from the Forestry Commission before you can fell growing trees.
