Read the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26\"><abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information</a> to understand what you’re required to do under an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement and how to apply.</p>\n\n  <p>Select ‘See all updates’ at the start of this page to find out how this action has changed for <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> compared with <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2024\">SFI24</abbr>. </p>\n\n  <p>For <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2024\">SFI24</abbr> actions, read the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/agreement-holders-information-for-sfi24-and-re-opened-sfi24\"><abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2024\">SFI24</abbr> agreement holder’s information</a>.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"duration\">Duration </h2>\n\n<p>3 years </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-much-youll-be-paid\">How much you’ll be paid </h2>\n\n<p>£5 per square metre (m<sup>2</sup>) per year – to calculate the area you must only include the area of the building’s ground floor, not any area from other floors or areas outside the building.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"actions-aim\">Action’s aim </h2>\n\n<p>This action’s aim is that there are:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>traditional farm or forestry buildings maintained in good condition</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>where relevant, preserved and accessible features used by bats, owls and kestrels</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The purpose of this is to: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>enhance the local landscape</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>preserve places for wildlife</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-do-this-action\">Where you can do this action     </h2>\n\n<p>To be eligible for this action, the traditional farm or forestry building, or parts of a building, must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>have been built using traditional methods, such as timber, brick, stone, tile or slate</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>have been built before 1940 for agricultural or forestry use, such as housing machinery or animals, or storing crops or processing crops, food or forest products</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>still be in agricultural or forestry use on your farm or land holding, whether or not this was the original use</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>be in good condition – this means the fabric of the building is intact, so it’s weatherproof</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must have management control of the eligible farm or forestry building for the 3-year duration of this action. </p>\n\n<p>You cannot do this action if the building: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>is a metal-framed Dutch barn</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>was constructed as a dwelling</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>is a farmhouse, residential or domestic building</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"eligibility-of-protected-land\">Eligibility of protected land</h3>\n\n<p>Sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs): Not applicable</p>\n\n<p>Historic and archaeological features: Eligible – you must get an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr> before you do this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.3 ’Land with historic or archaeological features’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this).</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-can-enter-into-this-action\">Available area you can enter into this action</h3>\n\n<p>Not applicable, as you’ll enter the area in m<sup>2</sup>.   </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action </h3>\n\n<p>This action is static. This means you must do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration. </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do</h2>\n\n<p>To maintain the traditional farm or forestry building in good condition, you must:    </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>complete a visual building maintenance assessment to check the building’s condition and identify any areas that need routine maintenance work or minor repairs to keep it weatherproof</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>carry out any necessary routine maintenance work and minor repairs on a ‘like for like’ basis using traditional materials and methods (unless non-traditional material has previously been used)</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>maintain any existing areas where a non-traditional material has previously been used to repair or re-clad the building, such as corrugated iron sheeting to cover roofs</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>To make sure there are preserved and accessible features for bats, owls and kestrels, you must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>complete a visual building wildlife assessment to identify any existing use of the building by these species</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>retain any existing features used by these species that you’ve identified in the building wildlife assessment</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>install an owl, bat or kestrel box if you’ve identified they’re required in the building wildlife assessment</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If you identify bat activity, you must:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>get advice from a licensed ecological consultant before you carry out routine maintenance work or minor repairs on the building</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow any advice from the ecological consultant about when work can be undertaken on the building’s fabric</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>comply with the relevant legal requirements for advice and licences – read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#get-any-regulatory-consents-before-you-do-your-sfi-actions\">section 10 ‘Get any regulatory consents before you do your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> actions’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more information</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must produce: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>a photographic record of the condition of the building as at this action’s start date</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>a written or photographic record of each visual building maintenance assessment you complete, including details of any areas of the building that need routine maintenance work or minor repairs to keep it weatherproof and the date you identify this need</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>a written or photographic record of the routine maintenance work or minor repairs completed, including when the work was done</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>a written record of the building wildlife assessment</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must not sell the building, or convert it to non-agricultural or forestry use during this action’s 3-year duration  </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it </h2>\n\n<p>You must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>complete the visual building maintenance assessment and building wildlife assessment at least once each year of this action’s 3-year duration</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>carry out any necessary routine maintenance work or minor repairs within 12 months of identification, or by this action’s end date if the need for maintenance work or minor repairs is identified during the final year of this action’s duration – unless bat activity has been identified and the ecologist’s advice is to carry out works later</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>install owl, bat or kestrel boxes, as relevant, within 12 months of this action’s start date, if you’ve identified they’re required in the building wildlife assessment</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it </h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>the required records identified in ‘what to do’</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>any receipted invoices (or bank statements where a receipted invoice is unavailable), consents or permissions connected with the work on the traditional farm or forestry building</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>a record of advice you’ve received from a licensed ecological consultant and any required wildlife licence, if you’ve identified bat activity in the building wildlife assessment</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must
