This means you must do it on the same location each year of the action’s duration.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do</h2>\n\n<p>Your Natural England adviser will assess your land. They’ll work with you to adapt and agree the activities you must do to achieve this action’s aim. All mandatory activities will be set out in your agreement document. </p>\n\n<p>To get paid for this action, you must:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>maintain water levels throughout the year to between 10cm and 30cm below the mean field surface level, across the land entered into the action by the second year of your agreement</li>\n  <li>install dip wells within the first year of your agreement</li>\n  <li>record water levels from dip wells each month</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it</h2>\n\n<p>You must do this action each year of its duration.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep</h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you have done to complete this action. If it’s not clear that you have done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, the Rural Payments Agency (<abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency \">RPA</abbr>) may ask for this evidence. You may need your landlord’s consent.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"capital-grants-to-support-this-action\">Capital grants to support this action</h2>\n\n<p>If you need to complete an implementation plan or a feasibility study before you apply, you can apply for <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/capital-items-guidance-for-applicants-and-agreement-holders#capital-grants-plans\">capital grants plans funding</a>.</p>\n\n<p>You can also <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/capital-items-guidance-for-applicants-and-agreement-holders\">apply for capital items</a> to help you achieve the action’s aims. Your Natural England adviser will discuss eligible capital items with you.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"advice-to-help-you-do-this-action\">Advice to help you do this action</h2>\n\n<p>The following optional advice may help you to do this action. Your agreement document will set out all the activities you must do..</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"manage-water-levels\">Manage water levels</h3>\n\n<p>Managing water levels are complex and management will vary from site to site. Manage water levels depending on the characteristics of your site, particularly its:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>geology</li>\n  <li>soil type and permeability</li>\n  <li>hydrology</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You will agree with your Natural England adviser on what management activities you will undertake using this action and how you will manage and monitor them.</p>\n\n<p>Your feasibility study or implementation plan will not set out the agricultural activity on the land, but do consider this as part of planning.</p>\n\n<p>Your feasibility study or implementation plan will include your site’s: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>peat depth and condition – use <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://england-peat-map-portal-ncea.hub.arcgis.com/\">Natural England’s geographic data to find peaty soils in England</a>\n</li>\n  <li>local geology, soil type and hydrology</li>\n  <li>the position and number of dip wells</li>\n  <li>effects on other habitats and local ecology, including any priority habitats or species, ditches of high environmental value, or historic or archaeological features</li>\n  <li>existing drainage channels relevant to the project area or those that may affect the ability to perform this action</li>\n  <li>water management and which organisations are likely to be affected and need to be consulted during the project</li>\n  <li>effects on the surrounding land use and water requirements, including getting agreement from neighbouring landowners if they will be affected</li>\n  <li>risk assessment on flooding outside the site</li>\n  <li>contingency for severe weather events, such as drought or flooding</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Your feasibility study or implementation plan will also consider:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>how much water is required to raise and maintain the water levels</li>\n  <li>how you’ll maintain water levels across the whole site and if you need capital works to achieve this</li>\n  <li>if you’ll need additional water</li>\n  <li>where it will be sourced from and stored</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>For sites of special scientific interest (<abbr title=\"Sites of Special Scientific Interest \">SSSIs</abbr>), you may need to ask a hydrology specialist to produce a water level implementation plan to balance and integrate the water level requirements on the <abbr title=\"Site of Special Scientific Interest \">SSSI</abbr>. LIDAR data can help you understand the terrain of your site. You can download the data for free from the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://environment.data.gov.uk/dataset/2e8d0733-4f43-48b4-9e51-631c25d1b0a9\">Defra data services platform</a></p>\n\n<h3 id=\"how-this-action-may-affect-farming-practices\">How this action may affect farming practices</h3>\n\n<p>Wetter conditions will affect cropped and arable land and could:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>reduce yields or increase crop failures if crops are intolerant to waterlogged roots</li>\n  <li>cause access difficulties from machinery and damage to the site</li>\n  <li>limit inputs of nutrients – you may need to review how you input nutrients effectively</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"how-to-modify-farming-practices\">How to modify farming practices</h3>\n\n<p>You are likely to need to modify your farming practices in wetter conditions, you could:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>switch to more tolerant crops, such as celery, blueberries or typha</li>\n  <li>invest in machinery with low ground pressure</li>\n  <li>adopt novel technologies such as using drones for checking crops and seeding</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Read about research into <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://www.paludiculture.org.uk/\">wetter farming and paludiculture initiatives</a> for more information.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"responding-to-climate-change\">Responding to climate change</h3>\n\n<p>Read Natural England’s publication: <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/file/5673659512127488\">‘Adaptation for habitats in Environmental Land Management Schemes’</a> to help you consider your general response to climate change.
