You must read the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/countryside-stewardship-higher-tier-csht\"><abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier \">CSHT</abbr> guidance</a> before you apply.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"duration\">Duration</h2>\n\n<p>5 years</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-much-youll-be-paid\">How much you’ll be paid </h2>\n\n<p>£396 per hectare (<abbr title=\"hectare \">ha</abbr>) per year</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"actions-aim\">Action’s aim</h2>\n\n<p>This action’s aim is that there’s an intact grass sward throughout the year, with:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>a medium sward height during the winter – this is typically between 5cm and 15cm</li>\n  <li>minimal bare ground</li>\n  <li>a reduced level of nutrient inputs applied</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The purpose of this is to:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>reduce nutrient inputs to grassland in priority Water Framework Directive (<abbr title=\"Water Framework Directive \">WFD</abbr>) groundwater failure areas</li>\n  <li>help slow or reverse nutrient levels in groundwater</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-do-this-action\">Where you can do this action</h2>\n\n<p>You can do this action on eligible land:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>located below the moorland line</li>\n  <li>typically receiving more than 200 kilograms (kg) per hectare of nitrogen per year</li>\n  <li>identified as a <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://magic.defra.gov.uk/MagicMap.aspx?&amp;startTopic=GreyRasters&amp;chosenLayers=baseIndex,gwnip&amp;box=-633930:208030:1433931:1191970&amp;useDefaultbackgroundMapping=false\">priority <abbr title=\"Water Framework Directive \">WFD</abbr> groundwater failure area</a> within the Countryside Stewardship targeting and scoring layer on the Magic website</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"eligible-land\">Eligible land</h3>\n\n<p>You can do this action on land that’s:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>an eligible land type</li>\n  <li>registered with an eligible land cover on your digital maps</li>\n  <li>declared with a <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/land-use-codes-rural-payments\">land use code</a> which is compatible with the eligible land cover</li>\n</ul>\n\n<table>\n  <thead>\n    <tr>\n      <th scope=\"col\">Eligible land type</th>\n      <th scope=\"col\">Eligible land cover</th>\n      <th scope=\"col\">Compatible land use code</th>\n    </tr>\n  </thead>\n  <tbody>\n    <tr>\n      <td>Temporary grassland</td>\n      <td>Arable land</td>\n      <td>TG01</td>\n    </tr>\n    <tr>\n      <td>Improved permanent grassland</td>\n      <td>Permanent grassland</td>\n      <td>PG01</td>\n    </tr>\n  </tbody>\n</table>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-can-enter-into-this-action\">Available area you can enter into this action</h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in the land parcel.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action</h3>\n\n<p>This action is static. This means you must do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do</h2>\n\n<p>Your Natural England adviser will assess your land. They’ll work with you to adapt and agree the activities you must do to achieve this action’s aim. All mandatory activities will be set out in your agreement document.</p>\n\n<p>To get paid for this action, you must:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>ensure the soil on your grassland is completely covered by vegetation to minimise bare ground exposure (as agreed with your adviser)</li>\n  <li>reduce or not apply fertiliser or manure</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must not:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>plough, cultivate or re-seed the soil</li>\n  <li>carry out supplementary feeding of livestock, apart from providing non-energy based mineral blocks</li>\n  <li>apply pesticides – you may be able to use herbicides to spot-treat or weed-wipe for the control of injurious weeds, invasive non-native plant species, nettles or other plants if this has been agreed with your Natural England adviser</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it</h2>\n\n<p>You must do this action each year of its duration.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep</h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you have done to complete this action.
