id=\"how-muchyoullbe-paid\">How much you’ll be paid </h2>\n\n<p>£129 per hectare (<abbr title=\"hectare\">ha</abbr>) per year </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"actions-aim\">Action’s aim </h2>\n\n<p>This action’s aim is that there’s a multi-species cover crop that’s: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>well-established over the winter months </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>present between harvesting a cash crop and establishing the next cash crop </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The purpose of this is to: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>protect the soil surface </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>provide root growth that benefits soil structure </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>supports soil biology and minimises nutrient leaching, soil erosion and runoff </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-do-this-action\">Where you can do this action </h2>\n\n<p>You can do this action on agricultural land located below the moorland line that’s: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>an eligible land type (as defined in <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.1.1 ‘Eligible land types’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information) </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>registered with an eligible land cover on your digital maps </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>declared with a <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/land-use-codes-rural-payments/land-use-codes\">land – you must get an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr> before you do this action (read <a this). </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-canenter-intothis-action\">Available area you can enter into this action </h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in a land parcel. It’s your responsibility to check that the area you enter is eligible for this action. </p>\n\n<p>You must do this action on the area entered into your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement. If something happens which means you cannot complete this action on some or all of the area, you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#complying-with-your-sfi26-agreement\">section 12.2 ‘What to do if you cannot comply with your agreement’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this.        </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action </h3>\n\n<p>This action is rotational or static. This means you can either: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>move its location for the second and third years of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do </h2>\n\n<p>You must establish a multi-species cover crop on land entered into this action which will not be harvested as a ‘cash crop’. </p>\n\n<p>A ‘cash crop’ means a crop grown to be harvested for commercial use. </p>\n\n<p>You must establish the multi-species cover crop early enough so it can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim. </p>\n\n<p>You must use a seed mix that contains at least 2 species from 2 or more of the following plant families: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>brassicas </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>legumes </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>cereals or grasses </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>herbs </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must avoid growing deep rooted species on any area within a land parcel with historic or archaeological features identified in your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr>. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.3 ‘Land with historic or archaeological features’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details.  </p>\n\n<p>You must maintain the multi-species cover crop over the winter months in a way that can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim. You can graze the cover crop with livestock, but it must still be well-established over the winter months. </p>\n\n<p>For the purposes of this action’s aim, the cover crop will be well-established if there’s: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>leafy vegetation that’s sufficiently well grown so the cover crop protects the soil surface for the duration of the winter months (usually from early December until late February) </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>minimal bare soil </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If something happens which means you cannot complete this action you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. For example, if there’s prolonged adverse weather which means the cover crop is not well-established. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#complying-with-your-sfi26-agreement\">section 12.2 ‘What to do if you cannot comply with your agreement’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this. </p>\n\n<p>You must not do the following on the well-established cover crop: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>mechanically apply any fertilisers or manures </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>destroy it before the end of the winter months, unless you’re establishing an early-sown spring crop </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If you’re establishing an early-sown spring crop, you may destroy the multi-species cover crop before the end of the winter months. You must not do this more than 6 weeks before you establish the early-sown spring crop. </p>\n\n<p>When you destroy the multi-species cover crop, you should try to minimise risks such as compaction, poaching, soil runoff or erosion. </p>\n\n<p>You can maintain an existing multi-species cover crop to get paid for this action if it: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>meets this action’s requirements </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>is not already being paid for under another environmental land management scheme option – you can use a cover crop paid for under SOH3 (multi-species summer-sown cover crop) to meet this action, but only if you overseed it  </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it </h2>\n\n<p>You must do this action each year of its 3-year duration. </p>\n\n<p>If this action’s start date means it’s too late for you to do this action, you must start doing it within 12 months of the action’s start date. </p>\n\n<p>In the final year of this action’s duration, you must do this action until the end of the winter months, or this action’s end date, whichever is earlier. </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it </h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’ </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices, including details of the seed mix used </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>photographs or other documentation </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence. Read the guidance on <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/hedgerow-management-rules-buffer-strips#buffer-strip-rules\">Hedgerow management rules: buffer strips</a> to understand how these rules apply to you.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"how-to-sow-the-cover-crop\">How to sow the cover crop </h3>\n\n<p>Your seed supplier can advise you on an overall sowing rate for the seed mix you choose.</p>\n\n<p>To help the cover crop achieve this action’s aim, it will usually help to sow the seed mix into warm soils. Depending on the species in your mix, this will be late summer or early autumn.</p>\n\n<p>You can drill or broadcast the seed mix. Drilling seeds is usually more reliable and gives a higher germination success than broadcasting. However, broadcasting is cheaper.</p>\n\n<p>After you have sown the seed mix you can roll the seeds if the soil is dry enough.
