This only affects the area where the feature is located in a land parcel. You can apply for this action on the remaining area in the land parcel if it’s eligible. </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-canenter-intothis-action\">Available area you can enter into this action </h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in a land parcel. It’s your responsibility to check that the area you enter is eligible for this action. </p>\n\n<p>You must do this action on the area entered into your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement. If something happens which means you cannot complete this action on some or all of the area, you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#complying-with-your-sfi26-agreement\">section 12.2 ‘What to do if you cannot comply with your agreement’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this.        </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action </h3>\n\n<p>This action is rotational or static. This means you can either: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>move its location for the second and third years of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do </h2>\n\n<p>You must establish and maintain legumes on improved grassland entered into this action. </p>\n\n<p>You can use one or more type of legume, such as: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>red clover </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>white clover </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>alsike clover </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>sainfoin </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>lucerne </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>bird’s foot trefoil </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can establish the legumes by: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>adding them to an existing grass sward </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>sowing a mix of grass and legumes </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Once established, you must maintain the legumes. To do this, you must manage them in a way that can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim. </p>\n\n<p>You can maintain existing areas of legumes on improved grassland to get paid this action if they: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>meet this action’s requirements </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>are not already being for under another environmental land management scheme option, such as <abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship\">CS</abbr> option GS4 (legume and herb-rich swards) </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it </h2>\n\n<p>If you’re doing this action on the same area of land for this action’s 3-year duration, you must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>establish the legumes within 12 months of this action’s start date </li>\n  <li>maintain the area of legumes in each subsequent year of this action’s duration </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If you’re rotating this action around your farm, each year of your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> agreement you must do it for a period of time that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim. </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it </h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’ </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements. </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>photographs or other documentation </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.6 ‘Land that’s already in other funding schemes or grants’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details.    </p>\n\n<p>You can do the following actions or options on the eligible boundaries of a land parcel entered into this action:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2026 actions: CHRW2, BND1, BND2 and WBD2</li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2024 actions: CHRW1, CHRW2, CHRW3, BND1, BND2 and WBD2 </li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2023 actions: HRW1, HRW2, HRW3   </li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier\">CSHT</abbr> actions: CHRW4</li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship\">CS</abbr> options: BE3 (management of hedgerows) </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"advice-to-help-you-do-this-action\">Advice to help you do this action</h2>\n\n<p>The following advice may help you to do this action, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"choosing-a-seed-mix\">Choosing a seed mix</h3>\n\n<p>Sainfoin, lucerne and alsike clover are more suited to grassland that you cut.</p>\n\n<p>Your seed supplier can help you choose a seed mix that’s the best match for your land and local conditions.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"where-to-sow-the-seed-mix\">Where to sow the seed mix</h3>\n\n<p>When you establish the legumes, by law you cannot cultivate or apply fertilisers or pesticides to land within 2 metres (m) of the centre of a hedgerow. Read the guidance on <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/hedgerow-management-rules-buffer-strips#buffer-strip-rules\">Hedgerow management rules: buffer strips</a> to understand how these rules apply to you.</p>\n\n<p>It can help to sow the seed mix where you want to reduce fertiliser use.</p>\n\n<p>Nitrogen fixation from the legumes will reduce if the soil phosphate and pH are not at optimal levels.</p>\n\n<p>Spreading the legume areas across the farm can help to provide a network of habitats for farmland wildlife.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"how-and-when-to-sow-the-seed-mix\">How and when to sow the seed mix</h3>\n\n<p>Your seed supplier can advise you on an overall sowing rate for the seed mix you choose.</p>\n\n<p>You can sow the seed mix shallowly into a firm seedbed or overseed into an established grass sward.</p>\n\n<p>Sowing the seed mix in March or April can help germination.</p>\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can sow after a silage cut, as the grassland is likely to be more open. You may get better results after the second silage cut (or late hay cut), as the regrowth is less vigorous.</p>\n\n<p>Legumes sowed after August may not establish before the winter.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"during-establishment-of-the-legumes\">During establishment of the legumes</h3>\n\n<p>It’s advisable to keep livestock off the areas of legumes while the seedlings establish. This will prevent new grasses or legumes being grazed out.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"maintaining-established-legumes\">Maintaining established legumes</h3>\n\n<p>Once the legumes are established, you can cut them or graze them with livestock providing you do it in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim.
