crop or permanent crops. </p>\n\n<p>The purpose of this is to: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>support an integrated pest management approach by managing crop pests in a more sustainable way </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>improve water and air quality </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>increase biodiversity </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-do-this-action\">Where you can do this action     </h2>\n\n<p>You can do this action on agricultural land located below the moorland line that’s:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>an eligible land type (as defined in <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.1.1 ‘Eligible land types’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026e 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information)</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>registered with an eligible land cover on your digital maps </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>declared with a <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/land-use-codes-rural-payments/land-use-codes\">land use code</a> which is compatible with the id=\"eligibility-of-protected-land\">Eligibility of protected land</h3>\n\n<p>Sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs): Eligible – you must:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/request-permission-for-works-or-an-activity-on-an-sssi\">give notice to Natural England</a> to get SSSI consent before the Rural Payments Agency (<abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr>) can offer you an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026e 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>have received SSSI consent from Natural England before you do this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#get-any-regulatory-consents-before-you-do-your-sfi-actions\">section 10.1 ‘SSSI consent’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026e 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details)</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Historic and archaeological features: Eligible – you must get an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr> before you do this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.3 ‘Land with historic or archaeological features’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026e 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this).</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-can-enter-into-this-action\">Available area you can enter into this action</h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in a land parcel. It’s your responsibility to check that the area you enter is eligible for this action.</p>\n\n<p>You must do this action on the area entered into your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026e 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement. If something happens which means you cannot complete this action on some or all of the area, you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#complying-with-your-sfi26-agreement\">section 12.2 ‘What to do if you cannot comply with your agreement’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026e 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this.      </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action   </h3>\n\n<p>For arable crops (including non-permanent horticultural crops) this action is rotational. This means you can either:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>move its location for the second and third years of this action’s duration</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>For permanent crops, this action is static. This means you must do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration. </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do </h2>\n\n<p>You must not apply any plant protection products containing insecticide on land entered into this action, including: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>insecticide seed dressings </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>nematicides and acaricides </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>other insecticides, such as silica insecticides and orange oil </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can apply herbicides, fungicides or plant growth regulators. </p>\n\n<p>If the land is being used to grow arable crops (including non-permanent horticultural crops), you must do this action on one ‘cash crop’ from when it’s sown until it’s harvested.  </p>\n\n<p>A ‘cash crop’ means a crop grown to be harvested for commercial use. </p>\n\n<p>For the purposes of this action, an arable crop includes: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>combinable crops, such as cereals and oilseed rape </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>root crops </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>field vegetables and salad crops </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>soft fruit crops which do not occupy the land for 5 years or more and provide repeated harvests (also known as permanent crops)</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can choose which arable crop to do this action on, but it must not be:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>a cover crop which you will not harvest for commercial sale </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>a short-term specialist crop, such as crops which are only in the ground for around 2 months</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>maize</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it </h2>\n\n<p>For arable crops, you must do this action on at least one crop that’s sown during each year of this action’s 3-year duration. You can harvest it in a subsequent year of this action’s duration if you sow the next crop for this action in the same year. </p>\n\n<p>This means you must do this action on a crop that’s sown during: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>the first year of this action’s duration – you can harvest it in the second year of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>the second year of this action’s duration – you can harvest it in the third year of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>the third year of this action’s duration – you must do this action until you harvest the crop or this action’s end date (whichever is earlier) </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If you’re already growing an arable crop on the land entered into this action when the action starts, you must do this action on a crop that’s sown within 12 months of the action’s start date. </p>\n\n<p>For permanent crops, you must do this action from its start date, throughout each year of this action’s 3-year duration. </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it </h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’ </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>photographs or other documentation</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence. Insecticides are used to control invertebrate pests.</p>\n\n<p>You can check:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>the product label to find out whether a plant protection product contains insecticide</li>\n  <li>the Health and Safety Executive website for <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://www.hse.gov.uk/pesticides/databases/index.htm\">information on authorised plant protection products containing insecticides</a>\n</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>This action allows you to apply herbicides, fungicides and plant growth regulators. You can also use molluscicides, such as slug pellets.</p>\n\n<p>As an alternative to using insecticide, you can use preventative measures or other control methods as part of an <abbr title=\"Integrated Pest Management\">IPM</abbr> approach.
