is that there’s companion crop growing with a main arable or horticultural crop.  </p>\n\n<p>The purpose of this is to do one or more of the following: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>support an integrated pest management (<abbr title=\"Integrated Pest Management\">IPM</abbr>) approach by acting as a trap crop for pests or by supressing weeds </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>provide a habitat for birds and invertebrates, including pollinators and natural crop pest predators </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>manage nutrient efficiency </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>protect soil and improve its condition</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-do-this-action\">Where you can do this action     </h2>\n\n<p>You can do this action on agricultural land located below the moorland line that’s:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>an eligible land type (as defined in <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.1.1 ‘Eligible land types’</a></p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>registered with an eligible land cover on your digital maps </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>declared with a <a land</h3>\n\n<p>Sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs): Eligible – you must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/request-permission-for-works-or-an-activity-on-an-sssi\">give notice to Natural England</a> to get SSSI consent before the Rural Payments Agency (<abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr>) offer you an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>have received SSSI consent from Natural England before you do this action (read <a – you must get an <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr> before you do this action (read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.3 ‘Land with historic or archaeological features’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this).</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"available-area-you-can-enter-into-this-action\">Available area you can enter into this action</h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in a land parcel. It’s your responsibility to check that the area you enter is eligible for this action.</p>\n\n<p>You must do this action on the area entered into your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement. If something happens which means you cannot complete this action on some or all of the area, you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#complying-with-your-sfi26-agreement\">section 12.2 ‘What to do if you cannot comply with your agreement’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this.       </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action   </h3>\n\n<p>This action is rotational or static. This means you can either: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>move its location for the second and third years of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do </h2>\n\n<p>You must establish a companion crop on land entered into this action, so it’s growing with the main arable or horticultural crop.  </p>\n\n<p>The companion crop does not have to be present for the full growing period of the arable or horticultural crop, as long as it’s managed in a way that can reasonably be expected to achieve the action’s aim and its intended purpose. </p>\n\n<p>You can establish the companion crop by: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>trap cropping – sowing a trap crop to attract crop pests away from the main arable or horticultural crop </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>inter-cropping – sowing the companion crop with the main arable or horticultural crop </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>undersowing – sowing a companion crop to form a living mulch beneath the arable or horticultural crop </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must avoid growing deep rooted species of companion crop on any area within a land parcel with historic or archaeological features identified in your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> <abbr title=\"Historic Environment Farm Environment Record\">HEFER</abbr>. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.3 ‘Land with historic or archaeological features’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> scheme information for more details. </p>\n\n<p>You can use an existing companion crop to get paid for this action if it meets this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it </h2>\n\n<p>You must do this action each year of its 3-year duration. </p>\n\n<p>If this action’s start date means it’s too late for you to do this action, you must start doing it within 12 months of the action’s start date.  </p>\n\n<p>For example, if you’ve already sown the main arable and horticultural crop before this action starts, you can establish the companion crop within 12 months of this action’s start date. </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it </h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’ </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices  </p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>photographs and other documentation </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence. Read the guidance on <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/hedgerow-management-rules-buffer-strips#buffer-strip-rules\">Hedgerow management rules: buffer strips</a> to understand how these rules apply to you.</p>\n\n<p>The species and type of companion crop you choose to sow will be determined by:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>the main arable or horticultural crop you’re growing</li>\n  <li>soil conditions</li>\n  <li>the crop pest to be controlled</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can establish the companion crop by trap cropping, inter-cropping or undersowing.</p>\n\n<p>Your seed supplier can help you choose what to sow and advise you on an overall sowing rate.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"establishing-a-trap-crop\">Establishing a trap crop</h3>\n\n<p>To establish the companion crop as a trap crop, you can sow it:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>around the field in plots or in between the main arable or horticultural crop</li>\n  <li>before, at the same time or as a separate pass into the main arable or horticultural crop</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>This can help attract pests away from the main crop.</p>\n\n<p>Find out more about trap cropping in the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) guidance on <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://ahdb.org.uk/news/can-companion-crops-give-osr-the-edge-over-csfb\">using companion cropping to manage cabbage stem flea beetle in oilseed rape</a>.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"establishing-an-intercrop\">Establishing an intercrop</h3>\n\n<p>To establish the companion crop as an intercrop, you can sow the companion crop with the main arable or horticultural crop.
