You must read the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/countryside-stewardship-higher-tier-csht\"><abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier \">CSHT</abbr> guidance</a> before you apply.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"duration\">Duration</h2>\n\n<p>5 years</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-much-youll-be-paid\">How much you’ll be paid</h2>\n\n<p>£613 per hectare (<abbr title=\"hectare \">ha</abbr>) per year</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"actions-aim\">Action’s aim</h2>\n\n<p>The aim is to change land use from arable or permanent cropping to permanent undisturbed grassland to prevent cultivation damaging historic and archaeological features. This means you must do it on the same location each year of the action’s duration.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do</h2>\n\n<p>Your Natural England or Historic England adviser will assess your land. They’ll work with you to adapt and agree the activities you must do to achieve this action’s aim. All mandatory activities will be set out in your agreement document.</p>\n\n<p>To get paid for this action, you must:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>establish a grass/flower mixture by shallow minimum till (‘min till’) cultivation or re-seed temporary grassland by slot seeding – agree a method with your Natural England adviser</li>\n  <li>once the mix is established, maintain it in a way that can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must not:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>plough on earthworks when establishing grass or flower mixtures</li>\n  <li>harrow or roll</li>\n  <li>supplementary feed on or within 6m of the historic or archaeological feature</li>\n  <li>allow scrub or bracken growth to establish on the area of this action</li>\n  <li>carry out drainage works, including modifying existing drainage, without written permission from Natural England</li>\n  <li>locate vehicle or stock access routes within around 6m of the historic or archaeological feature (existing surfaced tracks can be used)</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it</h2>\n\n<p>You must do this action each year of its duration.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep</h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you have done to complete this action. You may need your landlord’s consent.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"capital-grants-to-support-this-action\">Capital grants to support this action</h2>\n\n<p>If you need to complete an implementation plan or a feasibility study before you apply, you can apply for <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/capital-items-guidance-for-applicants-and-agreement-holders#capital-grants-plans\">capital grants plans funding</a>.</p>\n\n<p>You can also <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/capital-items-guidance-for-applicants-and-agreement-holders\">apply for capital items</a> to help you achieve the action’s aims. Your Natural England adviser will discuss eligible capital items with you.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"advice-to-help-you-do-this-action\">Advice to help you do this action</h2>\n\n<p>The following optional advice may help you to do this action. Your agreement document will set out all the activities you must do.  </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"managing-historic-and-archaeological-features-on-your-land\">Managing historic and archaeological features on your land</h3>\n\n<p>The best way to manage most archaeological features is for them to:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>be under permanent grass</li>\n  <li>have no scrub or tree cover</li>\n  <li>avoid doing anything that could cause erosion or damage</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Maintain a continuous grass sward over the features.</p>\n\n<p>If you re-seed temporary grassland by slot seeding, make sure you do not damage the existing sward.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"changing-land-back-to-permanent-undisturbed-grassland\">Changing land back to permanent undisturbed grassland</h3>\n\n<p>When land is reverted correctly, it can:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>provide grazing for livestock</li>\n  <li>reduce diffuse water pollution</li>\n  <li>reduce soil erosion</li>\n  <li>store carbon more successfully</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can enhance the character of the landscape by reverting land to mirror the field patten of the local area.</p>\n\n<p>You’ll only achieve successful carbon storage gains if you change land back to
