is that there’s a low input, open-structured cereal crop growing:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>in strips or plots</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>during the spring and summer months until it’s harvested</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The purpose of this is to:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>enable wildflower species to grow within the crop</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>provide summer foraging sites for declining and localised farmland birds, such as yellowhammer and reed bunting</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>provide habitat for skylarks, farmland wildlife and pollinator species</p>\n id=\"available-area-you-can-enter-into-this-action\">Available area you can enter into this action</h3>\n\n<p>Total or part of the available area in a land parcel. It’s your responsibility to check that the area you enter is eligible for this action.</p>\n\n<p>You must do this action on the area entered into your <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> agreement. If something happens which means you cannot complete this action on some or all of the area, you must tell the <abbr title=\"Rural Payments Agency\">RPA</abbr> in writing as soon as possible. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#complying-with-your-sfi26-agreement\">section 12.2 ‘What to do if you cannot comply with your agreement’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information to find out how to do this.       </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"rotational-or-static-action\">Rotational or static action</h3>\n\n<p>This is a rotational or static action – this means you can either:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>move its location for the second and third years of this action’s duration</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do it at the same location each year of this action’s duration</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do\">What to do</h2>\n\n<p>You must establish an autumn or spring cereal crop (not maize):</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>in strips or plots</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>at a seed rate that’s reduced to a level that can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>As long as this action’s aim can reasonably be expected to be achieved, you can:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>undersow a seed mix into the spring cereal crop</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>use a blend or mix of cereals</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Once the cereal crop is established, you must manage it in a way that can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim until it’s harvested.</p>\n\n<p>You must not:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>harvest the crop before it can reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim (usually not before around mid-July)</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>apply insecticides after around mid-March, until the crop is harvested</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must not apply herbicides, apart from those containing the following permitted active ingredients:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>amidosulfuron</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>clodinafop-propargyl</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>fenoxaprop-<abbr title=\"Phosphorus\">P</abbr>-ethyl</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>pinoxaden</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>tri-allate</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>It may not be possible for you to use these permitted active ingredients on all crops. It’s your responsibility to confirm whether herbicides are approved for use on the affected crop.</p>\n\n<p>You can use an existing cereal crop to get paid for this action if it:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>meets this action’s requirements</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>is not already being paid for under another environmental land management scheme action or option, such as <abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship\">CS</abbr> option AB14 (harvested low input cereal)</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"when-to-do-it\">When to do it</h2>\n\n<p>You must do this action each year of its 3-year duration.</p>\n\n<p>If this action’s start date means it’s too late to establish the cereal crop, you must establish it within 12 months of this action’s start date.</p>\n\n<p>In the final year of this action’s duration, you must do this action until the crop is harvested or this action’s end date, whichever is earlier.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-do-it\">How to do it</h2>\n\n<p>It’s up to you how you do this action, as long as you:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>follow this action’s requirements – these are identified by a ‘must’</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>do the action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve this action’s aim </p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to read the ‘advice to help you do this action’, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-to-keep\">Evidence to keep</h2>\n\n<p>You must keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n    <p>field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices</p>\n  </li>\n  <li>\n    <p>photographs or other documentation</p>\n  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence. Read <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sustainable-farming-incentive-2026-sfi26/sfi26-scheme-rules-and-guidance#check-your-land-is-eligible-for-sfi-actions\">section 5.6 ‘Land that’s already in other funding schemes or grants’</a> in the <abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026\">SFI26</abbr> scheme information for more details.   </p>\n\n<p>You can do the following actions or options on the eligible boundaries of a land parcel entered into this action:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2026 actions: CHRW2, BND1, BND2 and WBD2</li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2024 actions: CHRW1, CHRW2, CHRW3, BND1, BND2 and WBD2 </li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Sustainable Farming Incentive\">SFI</abbr> 2023 actions: HRW1, HRW2, HRW3   </li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier\">CSHT</abbr> actions: CHRW4</li>\n  <li>\n<abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship\">CS</abbr> options: BE3 (management of hedgerows)   </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"advice-to-help-you-do-this-action\">Advice to help you do this action</h2>\n\n<p>The following advice may help you to do this action, but it’s not part of this action’s requirements.</p>\n\n<h3 id=\"choosing-a-cereal-crop\">Choosing a cereal crop</h3>\n\n<p>It’s up to you which cereal crop (not maize) to use for this action.</p>\n\n<p>If you’re undersowing a seed mix into the spring cereal crop, you can sow it either:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>at the same time as the spring cereal crop, using a mix of cereal and companion crops (including pulse crops, such as field beans, lupins and combining peas)</li>\n  <li>as a separate pass into the spring cereal crop</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Undersowing the spring cereal crop with a flowering companion crop mix can provide flower and insect-rich foraging habitat for farmland birds and pollinator species.</p>\n\n<p>If you’re using a blend or mix of cereals, it can include crops such as:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>barley</li>\n  <li>oats</li>\n  <li>red millet</li>\n  <li>rye</li>\n  <li>triticale</li>\n  <li>wheat</li>\n  <li>white millet</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"choosing-the-right-location\">Choosing the right location</h3>\n\n<p>When you establish the autumn or spring cereal crop, by law you cannot cultivate or apply fertilisers or pesticides to land within 2 metres (m) of the centre of a hedgerow.</p>\n\n<p>Read the guidance on <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/hedgerow-management-rules-buffer-strips#buffer-strip-rules\">Hedgerow management rules; buffer strips</a> to understand how these rules apply to you.</p>\n\n<p>The best sites are those with low levels of pernicious weeds such as:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>blackgrass</li>\n  <li>couch</li>\n  <li>brome</li>\n  <li>ryegrass</li>\n  <li>wild oats</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"how-to-sow-the-crop\">How to sow the crop</h3>\n\n<p>To help you achieve this action’s aim, you can sow your cereal crop strips or plots at a seed rate that’s either:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>around 50% to 60% of the normal seed rate</li>\n  <li>to a maximum of around 100 kilograms (kg) per hectare (<abbr title=\"hectare\">ha</abbr>) – for barley, oats, rye, triticale and wheat it’s usually between 70kg and 100kg per <abbr title=\"hectare\">ha</abbr>; for red and white millet crops it’s usually between 10kg and 15kg per <abbr title=\"hectare\">ha</abbr>\n</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>It may also help if you sow your crop with wider spacing (for example, between 20cm and 25cm) between the rows.</p>\n\n<p>To minimise damage to plants and wildlife you can:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>avoid carrying out in-crop mechanical activities between May and harvest</li>\n  <li>sow your crop by the end of April, where possible</li>\n</ul>\n\n","change_history":[{"note":"Added 'Advice to help you do this action' section.","public_timestamp":"2026-06-17T11:22:26Z"},{"note":"No substantive changes have been made to this action for SFI26 (compared with the SFI24 version).\r\nThere have only been minor updates to standard wording which appears in all area-based SFI actions.
