id=\"how-this-item-benefits-the-environment\">How this item benefits the environment</h2>\n\n<p>Planting hedgerow trees will benefit wild birds and other wildlife by providing:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>shelter and food</li>\n  <li>nesting sites and song posts</li>\n  <li>stepping stones between woodland habitats</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>It will also make a valuable contribution to the landscape.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-use-this-item\">Where you can use this item </h2>\n\n<p>You can use this item in :</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>hedgerows on land in a management action or option</li>\n  <li>a Woodland Tree Health grant to replace trees outside woodland, hedgerow trees or areas where your Forestry Commission adviser agrees that you cannot use <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/countryside-stewardship-grants/supply-and-plant-tree-te4\">TE4: Supply and plant tree</a>\n</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-you-must-do-to-use-this-item\">What you must do to use this item</h2>\n\n<p>You must:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>carry out work between 30 September and 1 March</li>\n  <li>plant each tree in a pit deep and wide enough to contain the full depth and width of the root system</li>\n  <li>plant native species at least 2 metres (m) tall</li>\n  <li>plant trees in irregular spacing with at least 20m between them to allow for full crown development</li>\n  <li>tag each tree with a brightly coloured durable material</li>\n  <li>drive a clearly visible stake on either side of the tree</li>\n  <li>stake and tie each tree securely using material appropriate to the size and species of the tree</li>\n  <li>use flexible and adjustable tree ties (for example, rubber ties to prevent wind damage)</li>\n  <li>maintain stakes and ties until the tree is established – remove them when the tree no longer needs support</li>\n  <li>protect trees from livestock and wild animal damage</li>\n  <li>control weeds until the trees have established</li>\n  <li>replace dead trees in the following planting season – keep the same number of live trees as there are in your agreement</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>When planting in a hedgerow, you must plant the trees into gaps in the hedge – if there is no suitable gap then plant the trees into a notch cut into the hedgerow.</p>\n\n<p>You must not:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>plant trees beneath or within 20m of overhead power lines or other overhead and underground services</li>\n  <li>let tree guards damage the growing tree</li>\n  <li>fasten guards to the tree itself</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-you-must-keep\">Evidence you must keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>a map showing the location of existing hedgerow trees in each length of hedgerow and provide it with your application – this can be your Farm Environment Record when planting in a hedgerow</li>\n  <li>photographs of the completed work and provide them with your claim</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must also keep and provide on request:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>any consents or permissions connected with the work</li>\n  <li>receipted invoices or bank statements where a receipted invoice is unavailable</li>\n  <li>the date, location and method of any weed control carried out</li>\n  <li>the dates of planting</li>\n  <li>details of the age, height and species of each tree planted</li>\n  <li>photographs of It’s not part of this item’s requirements.   </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"when-to-plant-trees\">When to plant trees</h3>\n\n<p>Planting should not be carried out</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>during frost</li>\n  <li>during a drought</li>\n  <li>in waterlogged ground</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"how-to-plant\">How to plant</h3>\n\n<p>When planting trees:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>only use native trees already present in the local area</li>\n  <li>space the trees far enough to let crowns develop without competing or producing too much shade</li>\n  <li>space far enough apart so the gaps between trees can be easily trimmed with a mechanical flail</li>\n  <li>use irregular spacing to create a more natural landscape – look at the local landscape to see what is appropriate</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"making-the-trees-visible-to-protect-them\">Making the trees visible to protect them</h3>\n\n<p>The biggest threat to young hedgerow trees is management of the rest of the hedgerow by ‘flailing’. Hand-trimming a hedge 1m either side of young trees is an effective way to make them more visible.
