You must read the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/higher-tier-capital-grants-2026\">High Tier Capital Grants 2026 guidance</a> to understand the rules and how to apply.<br><br>\nIf you’re applying for this item as part of a Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier (CSHT) application, you must read the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/countryside-stewardship-higher-tier-csht\">CSHT applicant’s guide</a> to understand the rules and how to apply.</p>\n</div>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-much-youll-be-paid\">How much you’ll be paid </h2>\n\n<p>Up to 100% of actual costs.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"how-this-item-benefits-the-environment\">How this item benefits the environment</h2>\n\n<p>Conserving or protecting these features in the landscape supports the long-term survival of the historic and archaeological features.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-use-this-item\">Where you can use this item </h2>\n\n<p>You can use this item if you have either:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>written permission from Natural England (or the Forestry Commission in woodland)</li>\n  <li>been contacted by Historic England advisers about applying for <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/countryside-stewardship-grants/historic-and-archaeological-feature-protection-he1\">HE1: Historic and archaeological feature protection</a>\n</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can use this item for physical work to conserve or protect individual historic environment features. This work will change land management practices or restore a site.</p>\n\n<p>Examples of this work include:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>removing or moving inappropriate infrastructure, for example, tracks or boundaries where they are damaging to an historic feature</li>\n  <li>moving feed sites and restoring the surface</li>\n  <li>clearing vegetation and restoring eroded surfaces</li>\n  <li>consolidating structures such as ruins or bridges</li>\n  <li>de-silting designed waterbodies</li>\n  <li>archaeological excavation where needed to preserve ‘by record’ known archaeology that cannot be conserved through other management actions – ‘by record’ means making a record so you can reconstruct it after you have excavated an artefact and destroyed it</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You cannot use this item:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>for works on historic (roofed) buildings</li>\n  <li>to create a management plan for parklands, historic features or areas – use <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/countryside-stewardship-grants/feasibility-study-pa2\">PA2: Feasibility study</a> instead</li>\n  <li>to duplicate work previously funded under Countryside Stewardship or Environmental Stewardship.</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must not carry out any construction work related to the item unless you have approval from the responsible body.</p>\n\n<p>You should discuss and agree requirements that are specific to your site with your adviser.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-you-must-do-to-use-this-item\">What you must do to use this item</h2>\n\n<p>You must:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>agree a specification with Historic England, Natural England or the Forestry Commission</li>\n  <li>provide 3 written quotations for completion of the work including all associated costings with your application</li>\n  <li>agree the selected quotation with Historic England, Natural England or the Forestry Commission (the relevant body will contact you)</li>\n  <li>complete the works to the agreed specification and timescale</li>\n  <li>ensure you have any consents or permissions before starting the work – this can be scheduled monument consent from Historic England, listed building consent from the local planning authority or a felling licence from the Forestry Commission when removing trees</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-you-must-keep\">Evidence you must keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep and provide with your claim:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>photographs to show the completed works</li>\n  <li>a detailed specification</li>\n  <li>receipted invoices, or bank statements where a receipted invoice is unavailable</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must also keep and provide on request:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>any consents or permissions connected with the work</li>\n  <li>photographs of the feature before works start</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Read the record keeping and site visit requirements in the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/agreement-holders-guide-capital-grants-higher-tier-capital-grants-and-protection-and-infrastructure-grants-2026\">Agreement holder’s guide: Capital Grants, Higher Tier capital grants and Protection and Infrastructure grants</a> for more information.</p>\n\n<p>If you’re applying for this item as part of a Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier (CSHT) application, read the record keeping and site visit requirements in the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/countryside-stewardship-higher-tier-csht\">CSHT agreement holder’s guide</a>.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"advice-to-help-you-use-this-item\">Advice to help you use this item</h2>\n\n<p>The following advice may help you to use this item, but you do not have to follow it to get paid.
