This helps to reduce the risk of soil erosion, water pollution and can contribute to natural flood management.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-use-this-item\">Where you can use this item </h2>\n\n<p>You can use this item where all the following apply:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>in areas targeted to reduce water pollution from agriculture</li>\n  <li>where a gateway is acting as a channel for water movement</li>\n  <li>where a gateway is associated with farm machinery or livestock</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/catchment-sensitive-farming-reduce-agricultural-water-pollution\">Catchment Sensitive Farming</a> provides advice where there are water quality or flood risk issues linked to farming.</p>\n\n<p>You must get consents and advice before you start work from:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>the local planning authority (if the new gateway provides access to public highways or byways open to all traffic)</li>\n  <li>the Highways Authority (if a public right of way passes through the existing or new gateway)</li>\n  <li>a historic environment specialist (if the gateway is on a historic routeway)</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-you-must-do-to-use-this-item\">What you must do to use this item</h2>\n\n<p>You must:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>leave existing gate posts where they are, keeping any existing stone or slate posts that are traditional landscape or historic features</li>\n  <li>re-route the existing trackways associated with the gateway and improve the disused sections</li>\n  <li>fill the gap left by the old gateway using materials that match the character of the rest of the boundary</li>\n  <li>use new hanging and shutting posts in the new gateway</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-you-must-keep\">Evidence you must keep </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep and provide with your claim:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>photographs of the completed work</li>\n  <li>consents and advice from the Highways Authority or a historic environment specialist connected with the work</li>\n  <li>any consents or permissions from the local planning authority</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>If you do not need consent or permission from your local planning authority, you must provide evidence to show this. It’s not part of this item’s requirements.   </p>\n\n<h3 id=\"british-standards\">British Standards  </h3>\n\n<p>Check to make sure the works meet relevant <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https://www.bsigroup.com/en-GB/products-and-services/standards/\">British Standards.</a></p>\n\n<h3 id=\"reducing-surface-water-flows\">Reducing surface water flows</h3>\n\n<p>You may need to carry out other work to reduce surface water runoff including:</p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>relieving compaction</li>\n  <li>cultivating crops across slopes</li>\n  <li>using temporary water storage areas to capture surface flows</li>\n  <li>positioning new trackways where they do not attract surface water flows</li>\n  <li>positioning cross-drains along the track if you cannot create new trackways</li>\n</ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"maintaining-the-local-character\">Maintaining the local character</h3>\n\n<p>Restore the old gateway so it blends in with the rest of the boundary.
