Increasing the extent of permanent open space within the woodland habitat can improve biodiversity.  </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"where-you-can-use-this-item\">Where you can use this item  </h2>\n\n<p>You can use this item to create 2-zone rides where your woodland management plan identifies that capital work is required to create a more complex ride structure.  </p>\n\n<p>A ride in woodland is a linear open space which creates access. It allows light to reach the ground through an open canopy. A 2-zone ride: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>has a central grass area which is cut annually </li>\n  <li>consists mostly of short grass and compact flowering plants </li>\n  <li>has a mixed herbaceous zone on one or both sides of the path or track </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You can also create 2-zone rides adjacent to forest tracks and roads with the agreement of your Forestry Commission adviser. </p>\n\n<p>You can use with the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/find-funding-for-land-or-farms/cwd2-woodland-improvement\">CWD2: Woodland improvement</a> and <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/find-funding-for-land-or-farms/cws10-2-zone-rides-supplement\">CWS10: 2-zone rides</a> supplement to manage the zone once created. </p>\n\n<p>The herbaceous zone on either side of the ride is cut on alternate sides on a 3 to 5-year cycle. The zone is dominated by medium to tall grasses and flowering plants. It may include scrub. </p>\n\n<p>You cannot use this item without the consent of the Forestry Commission and a felling licence (if needed). </p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-you-must-do-to-use-this-item\">What you must do to use this item </h2>\n\n<p>You must: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>create a 2-zone ride in line with a Forestry Commission approved woodland management plan </li>\n  <li>provide at least 3 written quotations for completion of the work with your application, identifying associated costs </li>\n  <li>agree the selected quotation with the Forestry Commission </li>\n  <li>compete the works to the agreed specification and timescale </li>\n</ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"evidence-you-must-keep\">Evidence you must keep  </h2>\n\n<p>You must keep and provide your claim: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>receipted invoices or bank statements where a receipted invoice is not available </li>\n  <li>photographs of the completed work </li>\n  <li>a detailed specification document </li>\n  <li>copies of any planning or other permission </li>\n  <li>any other consents or permissions </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>You must also keep and provide on request:  </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>a copy of the advice from the Forestry Commission </li>\n  <li>a Forestry Commission approved woodland management plan </li>\n  <li>photographs of site before works start </li>\n  <li>a copy of consent from Historic England to use the item on a scheduled monument </li>\n  <li>a copy of consent from Natural England to use the item on a site of special scientific interest (<abbr title=\"site of special scientific interest\">SSSI</abbr>) </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Read the record keeping and site visit requirements in the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/agreement-holders-guide-capital-grants-higher-tier-capital-grants-and-protection-and-infrastructure-grants-2026\">Agreement holder’s guide: Capital Grants, Higher Tier capital grants, and Protection and Infrastructure grants</a> for more information. </p>\n\n<p>If you’re applying for this item as part of a Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier (<abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier\">CSHT</abbr>) application, read the record keeping and site visit requirements in the <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/countryside-stewardship-higher-tier-csht\"><abbr title=\"Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier\">CSHT</abbr> agreement holder’s guide</a>.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"other-items-with-this-item\">Other items with this item </h2>\n\n<p>You can use this item with <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/countryside-stewardship-grants/woodland-management-plan-pa3\">PA3: Woodland management plan</a>.</p>\n\n<h2 id=\"advice-to-help-you-use-this-item-\">Advice to help you use this item  </h2>\n\n<p>The following advice may help you to use this item, but you do not have to follow it to get paid. It’s not part of this item’s requirements.    </p>\n\n<p>When creating a 2-zone ride: </p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>look to connect existing areas of open habitat </li>\n  <li>orientate it in an east-west direction to maximise sunlight hours </li>\n  <li>make the width of the ride greater than the height of the adjacent canopy </li>\n  <li>manage it by cutting 50 metres (<abbr title=\"metres\">m</abbr>) to 100m strips on a rotational basis </li>\n  <li>make it with wavy edges to maximise the woodland edge and increase habitat diversity  </li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Before widening existing rides, be aware of sensitive plant communities and veteran trees (particularly in ancient woodlands).</p>\n\n","change_history":[{"note":"First
