Digital Nations

The Digital Nations is a network of the world’s leading digital governments committed to harnessing the potential of digital technologies to improve their citizens' lives. Digital Nations member countries champion innovation and collaboration, and work together to accelerate their digital transformation.

Formerly, the network was known as the Digital 9 (D9), Digital 7 (D7) and Digital 5 (D5). The United Kingdom is a founding member of the network, and hosted its inaugural Summit in London in 2014.

Digital Nations Charter

Digital Nations member countries endorsed the Digital Nations Charter during the 2019 Ministerial Summit. The Charter sets out members’ commitment to share best practices, and work together to solve common problems in digital government. The Charter outlines nine core principles of digital government that member countries commit to fulfilling, relating to:

  • user needs

  • open standards

  • open source

  • open markets

  • open government (transparency)

  • connectivity

  • digital skills and confidence

  • assisted digital

  • commitment to share and learn

All member countries of the Digital Nations are also members of the Open Government Partnership.

There are ten member countries in the Digital Nations.

Each member country participates in regular working level meetings, as well as annual Ministerial-level meetings, to share knowledge and expertise.

Working Groups

Policy and technical experts meet regularly to share their knowledge and expertise and undertake projects. The United Kingdom takes part in all four working groups:

  • Data 360

  • Artificial Intelligence

  • Greening Government

  • Digital Identity

November 2020

  • 7th Ministerial Summit, hosted virtually in Ottawa, Canada

  • Adoption of the Digital Nations Charter

  • United Kingdom becomes Chair of the Digital Nations

November 2019

  • 6th Ministerial Summit, held in Montevideo Uruguay

  • Denmark joins to form the Digital Nations

  • Adoption of Digital Nations Charter

  • Adoption of Digital Nations Data 360 Declaration

  • Canada becomes Chair of the Digital Nations

November 2018

  • 5th Ministerial Summit, held in Jerusalem, Israel

  • Mexico and Portugal join to form the Digital 9 (D9)

  • Adoption of D9 Charter

  • Uruguay becomes Chair of the Digital Nations

February 2018

  • 4th Ministerial Summit held in Wellington, New Zealand

  • Canada and Uruguay join to form the Digital 7 (D7)
