Designed to provide increased protection against high-velocity particles (120 m/s) and infrared, molten metal splash and hot solids. The face shield is clipped into the 3M V5 visor holder and fitted to the 3M G3501 High Heat Industrial Safety Helmet.

Hazard

The 5XG-IR5 face shield within the scope of the corrective action has been identified as presenting a risk of injuries to the eyes/face of the wearer. It does not provide the required level of protection against high-speed particles, in accordance with the requirements of EN 166: 2001 for which the product claims compliance. There have been no reports of injuries, accidents or complaints associated with this defect.

The 5XG-IR5 face shields within the scope of the corrective action do not meet the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment.

Corrective action

  • 3M has recalled the 5XG-IR5 face shields manufactured between July 2021 and September 2022.
  • 3M has provided distributors supplied with 5XG-IR5 face shields from the affected batches, with a Product Action Notice and instructions to notify the relevant end users.
  • The Product Safety Notice allows users to identify affected face shields (based on the month and year of manufacture). Users are instructed to stop using the product and return it to their local 3M distributor for credit.
  • Distributors are instructed to return any of the face shields in the affected date range to 3M Personal Safety Division through the 3M Customer Issue Resolution Team for credit or replacement at 3M’s expense.
