Revision to the New Enterprise Allowance statistics for April 2017 to December 2018

Published 7 October 2019

This statistical notice advises users of an error and upcoming revision to the main benefit claim of individuals starting on New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) per month, reported in the Official Statistics: NEA: April 2011 to December 2018.

The figures appeared in table 2 of the statistical release: NEA, percentage of individuals by month of earliest start on NEA and main benefit, April 2011 to December 2018.

The figures will be corrected in the upcoming statistical release: Official Statistics: NEA: April 2011 to June 2019, due for publication on Wednesday 23 October 2019.

We have identified that the reported percentages were calculated based on figures which included people who had attended a LinkUp:StartUp workshop but not started on NEA and a small number of Existing Self Employed who are presented separately in this publication and should not be included in Table 2.

This resulted in the reported percentage of individuals starting NEA on each benefit type per month being inaccurate by around 1 percentage point from April 2017 to December 2018. The percentage of individuals starting NEA on Universal Credit was under-reported. The percentages on Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, and Employment and Support Allowance and Incapacity Benefit was over-reported.
