MOD Education Support Fund (ESF): in-year bids [footnote 1]

Schools and local authorities which can provide evidence of negative impact linked to Service mobility and deployment as well as an immediate need for funding can submit an ESF in-year funding request.

When applying for in-year funding, there will be no need to submit a full application. The in-year process may also suit smaller schools with fewer Service children, if they can provide the necessary evidence of negative impact/immediate need.

Repeat funding requests for projects previously funded by an ESF grant cannot be considered without clear evidence of why this funding is vital and why the school/LA could not secure it via other means.

Applicants should submit a supporting statement of no more than 500 words to People-AFFS-ESF-Mailbox@mod.gov.uk, which should include the following:

  • full details of the school (type, name/address)
  • number of children on roll (covering the last three academic years)
  • number of service children on roll (covering the last three academic years)
  • service mobility/turbulence over the last three years
  • amount required
  • evidence of why funding is urgently required outside of the usual bidding round deadlines
  • details of how the funding will be used
  • evidence of how the funding will be sustained by the school
  • evidence of how this funding will make a difference to the service children at the school
  • armed forces sponsor details; see Annex C in the Instructions and guidance

In-year bids will be reviewed and scored by the MOD ESF panel as and when they are received. If the MOD ESF panel agrees that in-year funding should be awarded, an offer letter will be issued to the successful applicant, usually within 2 weeks from time of application.

If an in-year application is unsuccessful, AFFS will contact the applicant via email including details of why the application could not be supported.

If applicants have any outstanding questions which they would like to raise prior to submitting their request, they should email People-AFFS-ESF-Mailbox@mod.gov.uk.

  1. Correct at time of publication. Please note the ESF in its current form is under review and the in-year bid process is subject to change.
