Case study: Adam at Marriott in Liverpool

Updated 21 December 2023

Disability Confident Employer Marriott matched Adam’s skills to the tasks that needed to be completed

Adam (a pupil at Sandfield Park SEN School) joined our hotel initially on a Supported Internship Program.

Our Supported Internship Program began in September 2017 and is a partnership between Marriott, Sandfield Park School and Liverpool City Council. The program provides young people with disabilities the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and demonstrate to an employer over a period of one academic year their skills and employability. Adam was one of the first young people to join the program in Liverpool.

After completing the Supported Internship Adam has secured himself a permanent role with us as a Kitchen Assistant.

In order to support Adam into this role we went through a careful process of ‘job carving’ (supported by his job coach and Sandfield Park school) to establish Adam’s key strengths and match these to roles and tasks that needed to be completed in our business. This involved a totally new way of looking at our recruitment and challenged us to be more flexible with our job descriptions and job scopes.

In addition to this we worked with Adam to be flexible with our application process to ensure it was fully accessible to him – instead of having a standard interview for the role Adam made a video with his job coach that showed him demonstrating all the jobs he could do and the skills he has.

Adam is doing a fantastic job for us and we are extremely proud to have him as part of our team!
