Steve Dann

Biography

Steve Dann is the Border Force Chief Operating Officer. Prior to this he was Director, Border Force National Operations HQ.

Steve spent 4 years as the Director for the Home Office’s, Immigration Enforcement, Criminal & Financial Investigations Department, later combining this role with that of Deputy to the Clandestine Channel Threat Commander.

Steve has nearly 40 years’ experience in policing, security and operational law enforcement. Starting his career in London’s Metropolitan Police he progressed through the ranks to Chief Superintendent where from 2006 to 2009 he was Borough Commander at Hackney, East London.

His previous roles have included Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) for Police Shootings and Deaths in Custody in Northern Ireland, SIO for Kidnaps and Crimes in Action and Crime and the Intelligence Response lead for four years at Notting Hill Carnival.

In 2009 Steve graduated from the National Police College and was appointed Assistant Chief Constable in Hampshire Constabulary for three years including a secondment to Kabul, Afghanistan for a year working with the British Embassy and NATO’s Afghanistan Training Mission, supporting and mentoring senior Afghanistan National Police Officers and Director for Community Policing.

Steve is a qualified counter-terrorism commander and strategic firearms and advanced public order commander. He was awarded the US Military Superior Civilian Medal and the UK Civilian Service medal for his work in Afghanistan.

As the Generational Diversity lead for Immigration Enforcement, Steve deputised for the Home Office whilst driving forward the Command’s recognition of, and response to Windrush.

Steve was also the National Police lead for LGBT groups.

Chief Operating Officer

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for securing the UK border and controlling migration at 140 ports and airports, postal depots and rail terminals including Eurostar and Eurotunnel operations.

Work involves stopping passengers arriving by sea or air for immigration control purposes, revenue protection and risk-led interception of Class A drugs, cash, tobacco, alcohol, firearms, prohibited goods, counterfeit goods and clandestine entrants.

Border Force also plays a pivotal role in national security and counter-terrorism.
