Dame Mary Archer
Biography
Dame Mary Archer has been appointed as Non-Executive Board Member (NEBM) of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), taking up the role on 23 February 2024.
Dame Mary Archer was an academic, specialising in solar energy. Mary spent over 15 years as a Lecturer at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities and has a significant number of energy related publications to her name.
She was the founder chair of the National Energy Foundation and subsequently served as its president and now patron. Mary also co-founded the UK Section of the International Solar Energy Society, of which she is now patron. She is a Companion of the Energy Institute and was awarded the Institute’s Melchett Medal in 2002.
Mary has previously been a Director with Hydrodec Group plc for 7 years, and a Director of Cambridge University Health Partners for 3 years. She has been Chair of the Science Museum Group and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a NEBM with Addenbrookes NHS Trust. She has also been a NEBM with Anglia Television plc.
Non-executive board member
The main responsibilities of a Non-Executive Board Member are:
- attend meetings of the Departmental Board, chaired by the Secretary of State
- provide over-arching strategic guidance and insight to the Department
