Ian Cliff

Biography

Ian Cameron Cliff, OBE, took up his appointment as Chargé d’Affaires at the British Embassy in Zagreb in May 2015. He arrived in Croatia from Kosovo, where he had been British Ambassador since March 2011. He started his career in the late 70’s and served with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in South-East Asian Department, Middle East Department and the Permanent Under Secretary’s Department.

Overseas he served in the UK Mission to the UN and as Deputy Head of Mission in Austria. In 2001 he was appointed HM Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina (2001-2005), HM Ambassador to the Sudan (2005-2007), and Ambassador and Head of UK Delegation to the OSCE in Vienna (2007-2011).

Ian attended Hampton Grammar School and Magdalen College, Oxford (MA Modern History). He is married to Mrs Caroline Cliff and has three children. He is a keen historian, railway enthusiast and stamp collector and enjoys music and art.
