British High Commissioner for A Day

Two young Malaysian women will get a chance to be the ‘High Commissioner for a Day’ on 11 March 2024 where they will have a unique opportunity to head a diplomatic mission for a day, chair meetings, host a luncheon with women leaders and attend a Commonwealth Day reception.

The initiative by the British High Commission, which is held in conjunction with International Women’s Day and Commonwealth Day, is aimed at inspiring and empowering young women who are interested in international relations and diplomacy and might aspire to have a career in this area.

To stand a chance to be the High Commissioner for A Day, Malaysian women aged 18 to 25 are invited to take part in a social media competition which runs from 7 to 21 February 2024. To enter, participants must post a one-minute video of themselves answering the question: If you were High Commissioner in a Commonwealth country, what issue would you highlight and champion on the world stage and why?

The entry video must be posted on participant’s personal social media platform either X/Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn with the hashtag #HCforADayMY and the tag @UKinMalaysia. Details of the competition are available on the British High Commission’s (@UKinMalaysia) social media channels.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Her Excellency Ailsa Terry CMG, is delighted to launch the High Commissioner for a Day programme in Malaysia. She said:

The UK is a strong advocate for women empowerment and gender equality. Through this programme, we are giving young women in Malaysia a platform to talk about important topics. We want to develop young women as game-changers and showcase their potential as our future leaders.
