Technical review of Approved Document B workplan

A workplan for upcoming research to inform updates to fire safety guidance provided in Approved Document B.

Approved Document B gives practical guidance on fire safety in new buildings to meet the requirements of the building regulations.  Following this call for evidence, a number of areas of the guidance will need to be reviewed.  The work plan sets out how the work will be taken forward through further research in key areas of fire safety.

Call for evidence description

We extended the deadline for responses to this Call for Evidence to 11.45pm on 15 March 2019. This deadline was extended because a small number of respondents reported being unable to submit their response due to a technical problem. This has been resolved and we apologise for any inconvenience.

This call for evidence seeks views on the future technical guidance contained within Approved Document B (fire safety). It will be used to set the agenda, terms of reference and programme for the review and to identify what research may be needed to inform the review. The proposal is in line with the Secretary of State’s commitment to conducting a full-scale review of the guidelines commencing in the Autumn.

The department commissioned the Building Research Establishment to carry out a project on compartment size, resistance to fire and fire safety.

The project had 7 work streams - the reports are published on Gov.uk.
