Drought permits, drought orders and emergency drought orders allow water companies to manage water resources during a drought.

During natural disasters or other emergencies, water companies in England need to apply to the Secretary of State for a separate emergency licence. Companies in Wales need to apply to the Welsh ministers. This includes floods, emergencies caused by mismanagement, or other events that damage infrastructure.
